The van jerked forward and it felt like something in her chest ripped with it. Like her ribs weren’t just holding her heart, but a whole war she couldn’t name. The engine growled and the tires rolled and she just sat there on the cold metal floor, hugging her knees, her face sticky with tears she couldn’t remember crying. She tried to steady her breathing but it came out all wrong. Sharp and ragged and f****d up like everything else. He told her to live. To f*****g live. And now she was in the back of a federal van, half-naked and barefoot, treated like some kind of ticking bomb because the man she loved had a past that made the government piss itself.
