It didn’t take long before I heard wolves howling in the distance. The sound cut through me like a blade, sharp and immediate. My body reacted before my mind fully caught up. I knew exactly what it meant. Beau had alerted his patrol. Not to protect me. To stop me. Panic flared hot and sudden, lighting up every nerve in my body. My heart slammed against my ribs, breath turning shallow and fast. I didn’t hesitate. I ran. I aimed straight for the border, lungs burning as I pushed my legs harder than they wanted to go. The ground was uneven beneath my feet, roots and stones biting into my skin, but I barely felt it. All I could see was the faint shimmer of the border line ahead, barely visible between the trees. Once I crossed it, they couldn’t follow. Pack law was clear about that.
