I quickly finished getting dressed, and as soon as I heard Mara leave my room, I emerged from the wardrobe. I grabbed a chair from the desk and pushed it under the door handle to prevent anyone from barging in without my knowledge. They could still enter my room, but I would at least have a warning before they broke the door down. I sank onto the floor in front of the fireplace and remained still. Leaning against the wall, I lightly banged my head against it while watching the flickering flames. “Meadow,” I called, but she didn’t answer. She had retreated to the furthest corners of my mind, unwilling to confront the situation either. She had found a way to escape, and I wished I could do the same.
