The sudden darkness was instantaneous, a suffocating blanket dropped over the glittering wealth of the ballroom. But it didn't stay dark for long. I turned around in absolute alarm, my hands flying to my chest as the frantic screams of the high-society crowd echoed off the high stone ceilings.
