"What the f**k is going on here?" Mia asked as she stalked towards Lucas and me slowly.
"I missed you, little sister," Lucas said, with his hand wrapped firmly around me. I thought of pulling back, but from the look she gave me, I knew my safest haven was right here in his arms.
"Save that for later," she raised a hand to stop him.
"Mia, please calm down," I said as she walked closer.
"Calm down?" She barked a peal of laughter, "Do not f*****g ask me to calm down, I trusted you with my family and I come back to see you have snatched them away from me,"
"Watch yourself, Mia," Lucas growled with a frown.
"Mia," I said in a pleading tone, "you know that's not true, I would never do that to you,"
"Tell me what's true, why would you take advantage of them like that. I really thought we were friends,"
"Chris does not owe you an explanation Mia, you are my sister but you do not dictate how my life would go." Lucas released his grip around me, but only so he could hold my hand tighter, "And since I have not done a formal introduction, Mia, meet Chris, my girlfriend," her frown deepened as he said the word girlfriend, "Muffin," he turned to me with a smile, "meet my baby sister, Mia,"
"You know what," she shook her head tersely as if she was still trying to understand what was happening, "I am not doing this, I hired you so you can take care of the kids in my absence, well news flash, I am back. So you go upstairs pack up your s**t and get the f**k out of here right now."
"Mia listen to me for a second..." I said as my eyes stung with tears.
"She is not going anywhere Mia," Lucas interjected, "I do not know what the f**k has come over you, but you need to get your head straight and realize that this is my house. I decide who stays, and Chris is not going to move an inch."
"Great, I guess then I would take your silent hint and leave," she turned to leave, but Lucas shot his hand put and stopped her.
"I am not asking you to leave Mia," he said in a strained voice, "I would never do that to you,"
She smirked and folded her hands across her chest, "I'm glad she has not completely taken you from me and you still know who's more important in your life,"
"What does that even mean?" I retorted.
"It means that there is room for only one of us here, you leave or I will."
I was ready to burst out in tears at how the evening had turned around so quickly, beside me Lucas looked just as shocked and confused as me. His fists were clenched and he looked like he would pounce on Mia any second.
Meanwhile, Mia was suddenly red with amusement and she burst out laughing just as I held Lucas back from launching at her. Lucas and I watched with confusion as she rolled with laughter, clutching her stomach until she was almost breathless. "You should both see your faces right now," she managed to say when she stopped laughing, "God I should be an actress, because damn."
"What the hell was that about Mia?" Lucas asked, impatience and anger coloring his tone.
"That's what you both get for not telling me that I was getting a new sister," she wagged a finger in his face. "and Chris, I cannot believe you would actually think I would not want you to be my brother's girlfriend, I have been waiting for this day since you set foot here,"
"That was not a funny joke Mia," I swatted her arm.
"Not for one minute," Lucas said, still holding my hand and wearing a frown on his face.
"I cannot say I'm sorry to you Lucas," she said with a toothed smile, "I'm not, you deserve that for being an asshole to Chris for those first few weeks," she took a few steps towards me, "I'm sorry if I gave you a mini heart attack Chris, but next time you should learn to trust me, we're friends right?"
"Yeah we are," before the words were out of my mouth, she wrapped her hands around me and gave me a warm hug.
"Now, I have a certain sister-in-law that would go crazy at this great news," she said when she released me.
"You cannot tell Lilian," Lucas said quickly.
"Why, she has been waiting for this just as me."
"She has?" I asked, surprised.
"And mom too," Mia shrugged and took her phone out of her pocket, "but don't tell her I told you that, you know how mom is."
"Still," Lucas said and held her hand from dialing Lilian, "I'm going to tell them when we get together again as a family until then you would just have to keep your great news to you,"
"Ugh," she groaned, and then grinned, "can I tell the kids?"
"No you cannot tell the kids Mia," Lucas and I said at the same time.
"Okay okay," she said with an eye roll and shoved her phone back in her pocket, "Can I get some food or will you both take that from me too?" she feigned a scowl at Lucas.
"I'll set the table," I chuckled and reached for the table towel.
"Nope," Lucas shook his head and reached for my arm, yanking me back into him. "I believe I was about to get my reward for going to bed early before we were rudely interrupted,"
Mia rolled her eyes and chuckled as she reached for the bowls to serve dinner, "I'll give you guys a minute,"
Mia's presence back at home brought a much welcome addition to the joy we already enjoyed at home. As I expected, she milked me of details of everything that had happened since she was gone in the last two months, which was really long, but we had all night to talk. She was also very excited to talk about her trip to London and more importantly about her fiance. She was completely smitten by him. I smiled at the realization that my two closest female friends were well on their way to their forever.
Everyone including the kids was affected by the ray of happiness Mia carried with her, and it took a good effort to convince Aiden and Abby that they had to leave for school on Monday morning against their decision to stay home in their favorite aunt's arms.
Lucas did not bother to hide his annoyance that his sister received most of my attention through the weekend and he almost jumped in excitement when his mother had demanded that she visited on Tuesday. The kids and I were a little sad that she had to leave sooner than she had planned to, but that disappointment was short-lived after she promised to be back within the week to check up on the kids and for our all-girls day out. That was the theme Lialian had given the day we had arranged to go out.
Lucas was all over me the minute I walked back into the kitchen after saying goodbye to Mia and dropping the kids off at school. He nuzzled my neck softly, with his arms wrapped around me, "I missed you,"
"We have slept in the same bed for the last week," I giggled, despite the thrills that shot up my spine from hot breath on my skin.
"I meant this," he clarified, "the peace and quiet of having you to my self for the whole day, no kids, no Emma, and no annoying Mia,"
"Last I heard Mia was your only and favorite sister," I reminded him, cupping his cheeks.
"Not when she's stealing you from me," he growled and dropped his head lower to my shoulder, biting softly.
"I would not call it stealing seeing as she had your—our permission," I moaned.
"Permission by coercion," he raised his head and quirked a brow and despite myself, I found it amusing. "are you still meeting up on Friday?"
"Yup," I nodded, chuckling at the frown that formed on his face. "Also don't you have to get to work?" I looked at the time on the wall clock above us.
"You always give me a reason to remind you that I own the company, and I can come around anytime I want," he smirked.
"Well Mr. Ceo," I said with an amused smile and managed to tear myself from his grip, "this nanny has a whole lot of chores to do and I am afraid I cannot just start whenever I want,"
"Why do you have chores?" he frowned following behind me as I reached for the list of chores Emma left me on the counter.
"I forgot to tell you that Emma had to run to the hospital this morning, I think there was an accident with her son or nephew," my face scrunched up in worry as I remembered how awful Emma looked when she left very early this morning.
"Nephew," he corrected and took out his phone.
"And before you get mad at her for not telling you she was leaving,"
"I was not going to be mad," he raised a brow.
"Good, because she was crying frantically and she seemed so worried I had to let her go immediately,"
"s**t," he muttered as he scrolled through his phone, "I wonder what's wrong with him now,"
"If she had to go to the hospital, it must be pretty serious." I could not help but wonder what could be serious enough to have Emma the most cheerful help here sob so much this morning.
"She won't pick up the phone, I'll just call her later," He tossed his phone on the table and took my hand, "she's probably trying to handle everything back there right now,"
"I offered to handle everything here while she left to take care of him,"
"That was so thoughtful Muffin, she might be gone for few days."
"Which is why," I picked up the list and skimmed through it, "I need to get to work now,"
"Are you sure you don't want me to have a replacement for her for the next few days?" he asked in a concerned tone.
"I'm not going to die from doing the laundry, groceries, and a little cleaning for the next few days Lucas. I'll be fine."
He gave me a brief and thoughtful look full of adoration, "I hate to bring this up right now, but you keep amazing me with how different you are from Sarah," he said her name like it was poison on his tongue and something I could not quite figure flashed between his eyes. I frowned at the reminder of what had been haunting me for the last few weeks. I had considered bringing it up to Lucas but thought better of it after his reaction back at our lunch date, even Mia seemed to be very upset when I had talked about her the night we got together. Apparently, everyone loathed her very name and would hear nothing about her.
I wanted to remind him that he would never get over her if he kept trying to see the differences between both of us but the thought left my head when he pulled me closer and captured my lips in his, the warmth and desire that radiated off him easily made me forget about my stalker. His mouth was warm and the taste of the coffee he had just had easily overpowered his natural taste, but I was not complaining.
One hand dug into my flesh, while the other trailed lower to my thighs, pushing my dress higher slowly. I managed to break free and held the list higher. "Chores," I reminded him, well aware that if I let him go that far neither of us would achieve any other thing all day.
"Of course," he chuckled and straightened, adjusting his jacket. "call me if you need anything," he held me closer again.
"Goes without saying," I stood on my toes and kissed his chin.
"You have to be a little more stern if you really want me to leave,"
"Wel in that case," I pushed myself away from him, "get out of here Maxwell, I got work to do."
