My eyelids felt like lead weights, resisting every effort to pry them open. I squeezed them shut, pain pulsing behind my closed lids, before gathering the strength to try again. This time, with a sharp, straining effort, my eyes fluttered open.
A dizzying pain throbbed in my skull, blurring the edges of my vision. I winced, blinking away the discomfort, when I realized my arms were bound. My head thrashed from side to side, the room swaying in my blurred vision as I tried to piece together where I was.
