“Your dad will be here soon,” Mom tells me that night when she kisses my head and tucks the sheet around my shoulders.
I can’t wait.
It takes me a long time to go to sleep thinking about seeing my dad again. Finally, I do, but what seems like a minute later I hear a noise, like a shuffle and the sound of a door closing. It’s someone walking down the hall and out the back door.
