Blurb

After decades of bloodshed on the battlefield, renowned war hero Ruth Vernard—feared as both the Grim Reaper and the Guardian Angel—retires to the city of his youth, seeking a peaceful life away from war and politics. Living quietly, he watches the world move on, content to remain unnoticed.

One evening, a group of petty thugs attempts to rob him. Amused, Ruth humors them, ready to end the charade at any moment. But before he can act, a fiery young woman storms into the alley, fearlessly defending him. She’s Melina Lynden, the daughter of a wealthy family, stunningly beautiful and full of righteous anger. Though her efforts are unnecessary, her courage and kindness strike something deep within Ruth's hardened heart.

For the first time in his life, the strongest man alive feels something more terrifying than war—love.

Drawn to Melina, Ruth embarks on a journey unlike any before. But his past refuses to stay buried. Old enemies, hidden threats, and his own struggles with vulnerability stand in his way. Can a man forged in war truly embrace love? Or will fate tear them apart before their story even begins?

In a world where strength has always been his shield, Ruth must now learn that the bravest battles are fought with the heart.

Return
After a decade of bloodshed Ruth Bernard finally returned back to his home town. Though the higher ups wanted him to take on a political post he refused as he loved to remain low key. Only the higher ups and his loyal followers knew who he was. For his countrymen he was the Guardian Angel and for enemies he was the Grim Reaper. He gained the fame for defending his country with no more than 200 mercenary that followed him. No enemy was able to trespass on the land that he guarded. He arrived early morning in the airport of the N country's Y city. Outside the airport, he sat by the chair and began to ponder about his life ahead. Sigh 'I fought with thousands of people and protected my country but now I don't even know how to live in this society that is different from the bloodshed of the battlefield.' 'I think it would have been better to accept an assistant but there's no point thinking about it now.' He got off the chair and began to watch people around him. The young ones walking happily and the old ones enjoying their time. The busy employees hurrying to their job and the couples bound in their own world. He mumbled " The world seems so different from what I remember." Ruth Vernard was an orphan. He struggled each day to survive his childhood. He barely completed his basic education before enlisting himself in the mercenary. He never new parental love nor did he knew companionship. The only thing he knew was that only the strong can survive and that conviction of his made him who he is today. He learned about companionship and loyalty from his followers. There were many eyes following his every move. After all the higher ups were wary of him. They couldn't let him do anything that will crumble the power balance within the country. Ruth looked around and saw several of the people secretly keeping a watch over him. He shook his head and sighed 'Tch, I only want to live a normal life yet they are afraid that I will cause some sort of disaster.' "Whatever I just hope they won't interfere with my life." "Hmm, I should first look for a small house or an apartment for me to live in. Since I don't have any house at the moment." He then waved his hand to a passing by taxi. The taxi driver was a middle aged man who politely asked him "Where do you want to go sir?" He smiled and replied politely "Hmm, can you take me to a place where I can buy small house or an apartment?" The taxi driver was nervous because the man looked scary despite his polite reply. Yet thinking about his family that depends upon him, the driver nodded his head and said "Please, be seated sir. I will take you to your destination." Ruth nodded his head and got in the car. Feeling the beating heart of the driver he couldn't help but sigh as he asked "Do I look so scary?" The driver was startled by the sudden question. He hesitated and said "It's not that you look scary but your smile gave me goosebumps. I hope my words won't offend you." The driver was sweating so much that his hands were becoming slippery. Ruth nodded his head and replied " You don't need to worry. It's just that I forgot to live a normal life and it's hard trying to adjust back." The driver finally breathed in relief and got his composure back. Curiosity brewed in his mind so he asked "If you don't mind, can you tell me what job you do? it's my first time seeing someone as young as you going to buy a house." Hearing that Ruth frowned hard and asked " Is that so? I thought buying a house at this age would be normal. Will I stand out if I buy a house right now? About the job I really can't say but it's not the wrong job. I can assure you about that." The driver began to open up as the young ma. sitting behind him on a passenger seat seem to be an easy going person. He said " If you don't want to stand out then you can buy a house at the outskirts of the city. They are pretty cheap costing just around 40 thousand dollars." Ruth felt elated as he thanked the man for his kind suggestion. "I never thought about that. Thanks for the suggestion. I will just do as you suggested." Soon they arrived at one of the most bustling real-estate company. Ruth paid his fare and gave few thousand dollars extra. Seeing that amount of money being handed over the driver refused "No, No.. I can't take this money. You already gave the taxi fare so it's enough." Ruth shook his head as he said " Just think of it as a kind gesture of a son like figure. Please, I will be bothered for who knows how long it you didn't take it." Hearing that the driver couldn't help but receive the amount reluctantly. He then handed Ruth his business card and said "I cannot accept it for free. But I will take it only if you promise to contact me whenever you need a ride." Ruth was taken aback as this was the first time someone refused to take money. He nodded his head and accepted the business card "Sure, I will call you whenever I need a ride." They both parted ways and Ruth headed towards the entrance of the Real-Estate business company. Unlike many people visiting the company he was dressed poorly. The guards at the door stopped him and scolded " How dare a filthy man like you try to get inside of our company?" Ruth looked around and saw no other person beside him. He then asked " Are you talking to me?" The guards laughed as they began to mock him "Look at this filth. He can't hear us properly." Ruth felt enraged as there wasn't a single person in the world who dared to belittle him. Yet thinking about remaining low key he decided to endure. He politely asked "Gentleman, I wish to buy a small house with my savings.Could you please let me in?" The guard laughed even more and said in disdain "A filthy like you have enough to buy a house? Don't waste our time and cause trouble. Get lost or we'll have to do it the hard way." Ruth frowned and was ready to make his move when a burly man with face covered in scars approached the gate and asked " What's going on in here?" Ruth could tell that the man had joined the battlefield but the man was unable to hide his aura. He simply said " I wanted to buy a small house but they won't let me in." Burly man looked at Ruth and felt like staring at an abyss full of corpses. Before the two guards could say anything the burly man politely refused "Gentleman please ease your anger. They are not so smart so please be considerate." His reply caused the guards to frown but they dared not voice out the words. Ruth gave a polite smile as he said "You should refine your experience to not scare off the ordinary people." He then went in. The burly man replied " Thank you for the suggestion. I am Jonathan the head guard of this company." Ruth didn't reply but the man didn't mind. He took a deep breath and said "You two should learn some restraint. The last words that Ruth said were the words his seniors used to say before he left the battlefield. "Thank god I made it in time."
