Even to the others’ ears, there was finality in Sibyll’s words and tone—and in more ways than one. It made Ainsley look up at her father’s face in heartbreak, but George took it with nothing but grace. “I understand,” he said with a small nod. “I’m truly sorry, Sibyll, Sebastian.” When Sibyll couldn’t get herself to answer at once, Seb replied for them both, “It’s fine, George. Really.” He glanced at Ainsley’s face but averted his eyes just as quickly. “I’m sorry too.” With that, there was nothing left to say. The group parted in silence to board two separate cars. Sibyll continued to be mostly silent as she drove her son back to his place, only confirming one last time that he was all right before warning him not to speak and insist on getting a lawyer first if the police came for him
