002: Broken Promises

I hear him before I see him. The forest seems to hold its breath. Every rustle, every shadow makes my heart skip a beat. “You shouldn’t have come,” I say, my voice sharp. “I had to,” he replies, stepping into the pale moonlight. His eyes burn with intensity. “I couldn’t stay away.” “I survived without you,” I snap, crossing my arms over my chest. “Do you even understand what that means? Nights alone, pretending you cared, hoping you’d come back?” “I know,” he says, his voice low, almost a growl. “And I’ll spend every day proving it. I won’t leave you again, Lydia. Not now. Not ever.” I press a hand to my belly instinctively, feeling him—my secret, my life. “It’s not that simple. You left me. You left him. And you think words can fix it?” “They can’t,” he admits. “But actions… actions can. I’ll fight for both of you, Lydia. Every day. I swear it.” I take a step back. “You should have thought about that before. Before I learned to survive without you. Before I became everything you thought you could leave behind.” His jaw tightens. “Then I’ll earn you back. I swear it. Every moment, every second. Until you believe me.” A rustle in the trees makes me flinch. He moves in front of me, protective. “It’s nothing,” he says softly, though his muscles are tense. “I’m just… aware.” “Aware?” I echo. “Of what? That I’ve survived better than you ever imagined? That I’ve built a life without you?” “Yes,” he says, voice rough. “But that life isn’t complete without me. Not for you. Not for him. Not for us.” I bite my lip. “You think you can step back in and make everything right? That the months you were gone… they mean nothing?” “They hurt me too,” he admits. “Every day. Every moment I wasn’t here, I was losing the only things that ever mattered to me.” “Then why didn’t you fight?” I whisper, anger and disbelief rising. “I… I didn’t know how,” he says, eyes dark, almost haunted. “I thought I could come back, and it would be enough. But now I know it’s not. I have to earn you. I have to fight for you. For him. For the life I abandoned.” I swallow hard, the tension between us unbearable. “You have no idea what it took for me to survive… alone. Every step, every decision, every sacrifice. And you want to waltz back in?” “I’m not asking,” he says, voice low, firm. “I’m telling. I’m here. And I won’t leave. Not again. Not for anything.” I stare at him, heart hammering. My hands tighten around my belly. “If I let you back… it won’t be easy. Not for you. Not for me. Not for him.” “I’ll take every challenge,” he says, stepping closer. “Every doubt, every fear, every obstacle. Because I won’t lose you again. Not him. Not you. Not this time.” The wind whistles through the trees, carrying the scent of danger, of secrets, of desire. I want to believe him. I want to let go. But I can’t. Not yet. “Then we’ll see,” I whisper, voice tight. “We’ll see if words are enough… or if actions truly speak louder.” He steps even closer, the intensity of his gaze burning into me. “They will,” he says. “I’ll prove it. Every single day. Until you can’t deny it.” The forest is silent around us, but the tension crackles like lightning. One touch could ignite everything—or destroy it. And neither of us can turn away.
