The sharp thud not only startled the people waiting for the elevator but sent Hudson into full-blown panic mode.
"Audrey!" His shout echoed through the lobby, but I was too mortified to respond??let alone face him. Just then, the elevator doors slid open, and the crowd of office workers surged inside. Seizing the moment, I yelled, "Hold the door!" clamped a hand over my throbbing forehead, and bolted in before anyone could react.
The doors sealed shut, and the elevator began its ascent.
