Our formation had collapsed into a desperate cluster. Fourteen wolves, surrounded by hundreds of enemies, are trying to push through by sheer force of will. It wasn't enough. “Luna!” Martin's cry of warning came too late. Something massive hit me from behind. I went down hard, skidding across blood-soaked ground. Rolled. Tried to get up. An enemy was on me before I could regain my feet. Teeth closing toward my throat. Then Kael was there, tearing the attacker away with savage fury. “Get up!” he snarled. “We move!” I scrambled to my feet, my left hind leg not quite working right. Something torn. Something is broken. Didn't matter. I limped forward, using three legs and pure stubbornness. The crystal was a hard presence against my chest, tucked into the leather harness I wore.
