Every night I set the coffeemaker to have coffee ready for me when I got up. I’d have some toast with the coffee while I read the paper. It can take between one and two hours to read the L.A. Times in the morning, if you take it easy. Then there were chores: dusting, vacuuming, washing dishes, preparing my meals, organizing my bookshelves, paying bills. And gardening. I’d never done any gardening before, but it was an amazing timekiller—excuse me, hobby. Why, my life was so full and rich there were some days I never even turned on the Mac at all. The feeling happened several more times. It was never predictable—never in the same place or at the same time of day.
