That evening, Abby went home a happy girl. She was on good terms with Lucas, and she had agreed to be friends with him on condition that he didn’t treat her like a treasure but as a normal friend.
“You look happy tonight, care to share the good news?” Emma asked her daughter later at night as she was helping her prepare dinner.
“Nothing, do I need a reason to be happy?” She asked rhetorically, and Emma shrugged. Her daughter sure knew a way of firing questions with questions and evading the real questions.
“You are a cunning young lady. Pass me those plates.”
“I am not, Mom. Well; now that you insist, I think I should let you know that my videos were pulled down.” She said happily and her Mom chuckled softly.
“What video?” She asked as she stirred the soup in the pot.
“I am sorry I forgot to mention some of the students recorded while I was being bullied. It was not a nice scene to watch, but Lucas came to me today and asked for forgiveness, he said he would do something about the video, and in the evening there was no trending video, neither was it on anyone’s phone.” She said as she wiped the plates and put them on the dish rack.
“Yeah, I am sorry about that baby, but why would someone who intimidated you be so involved in pulling down the videos and being friends with you? I don’t have a good feeling about this,” Emma remarked, and Abby shrugged.
“At least he is sorry about it, that is what matters. I am safe for now until he decides I am not. That is what happens when the playboy bully makes you his chase.” She said.
“Okay, just be careful with him, he might be up to something. Don’t be too engrossed in what he is doing but why he is doing it, so you don’t end up heartbroken again. It is, I don’t want anything to happen to you, Abby my love.”
“Nothing will happen. Are you afraid that he is planning to use me? Mom, I have nothing he wants; he is rich, cute, and has everything he has ever wanted and I on the other hand, well, let me just say I am the opposite of him, I am fat, poor, and with nothing to offer.”
“Well, since you think so low of yourself, let me break it down for you. You are my daughter. You are very intelligent, beautiful, and confident. You don’t need money to have a good heart, and a good heart wins more than just money.”
“You could make a good motivational speaker, Mom. Ever thought of giving it a shot?” She asked, and her Mom slapped her playfully.
“Take the plates to the table. You play too much, but I hope you heard what I just told you. Don’t fall for his traps, he is not your friend, he is just going to use you.”
“Jeez Mom, it is okay. I will be fine, let’s just forget about Lucas's problem, and let us just have dinner and a normal night like we always do.” She suggested, and Emma nodded.
They had dinner in silence. Abby then washed the dishes and joined her Mom to watch their favorite TV show.
“How is your new workplace taking you?”
“Good, my new boss was something else but I am getting used to it. I will be okay. I am worried about you though.”
“You know about the new school and adapting, but I trust you. I know you will do just fine.”
“Thank you, Mom, but I am going to have to leave you here tonight. I am off to bed. Will I see you tomorrow?”
“Yeah, okay. Goodnight, and don’t stay up too late.” She said, kissing her on the cheeks.
“Okay Mom, I love you.” She said and went upstairs to her room. Her main concern was texting with Lucas, since her room was the only place she could do so, without having to deal with her Mom’s hawk eyes.
Lucas: You took forever to reply. What have you been up to?
Abby: Helping my Mom prepare dinner; I suppose you don’t do that because you have people who do that for you?
Lucas: Yeah, that is what everyone assumes about me, but I do help around sometimes. What about your father?
Abby: Story for another day. What have you had for dinner?”
Lucas: Not yet. I just got back home.
Abby: From where it is ten.
Lucas: Yeah, I went out clubbing with my friends. I bet you don’t know anything about clubbing. Do you drink?
Abby: Nope, my Mom would kill me if I did. Plus. I'm trying to live a healthy life.
Lucas: I bet you do; I am just here trying to freshen up and eat something before I go to bed. Maybe we can chat later?
Abby: Sure, I have a few things I want to check into, but hopefully, I will be awake by the time you come back.
She replied, and placed her phone under the pillow waiting for Lucas to text her back.
She was woken up the following morning with her alarm ringing, “damn, so I slept off with my clothes on?” she muttered, going through her phone, but there was no new message from Lucas. She brushed the thoughts off and slid out of her warm covers, rummaged through her closet, looking for some clothes for the day.
She went to the bathroom for a quick shower. She settled on a pair of faded blue jeans and a long-sleeveless top that covered her protruding tummy.
“You are up late, again.” Her Mom said as soon as she walked into the living room.
“Yes, I slept off late last night, I guess. Were it not for my alarm, I would be dead asleep right now?” She said as she poured some cereals into the dish, and added milk.
“I warned you about sleeping late. You have ten minutes to get in the car young lady.” " her mom said and walked to her room.
Abby quickly ate her breakfast, took her backpack, followed her Mom to the car, and strapped on her safety belt.
When she got to school, the first person she met was Jake. He was sitting in the administration block, his face buried in his phone.
“There you are, what are you looking at?” Abby asked as she squeezed herself next to him.
“Nothing much, just some video game I wanted my dad to buy me, and he told me to check it out. So, how was your night? You sound chirpy this morning.”
“My night was good. What is your obsession with video games anyway?” She asked as she fished out her phone.
“Men love video games, despite I don’t have a lot of friends, and they are my only company.” He replied, switching off his phone, and turning all his attention to her.
“Yeah, I don’t have a lot of friends either, but I don’t have video games, my Mom can’t afford those.” She replied, and before Jake could respond to that, he nudged her.
“Your boyfriend is coming over; I am going to leave you two to it.” He said as he stood up. Abby looked up, to see Lucas walking towards them.
“No, don’t go. He is good nowadays; you shouldn’t be so afraid of him.” She urged him, and Jake resumed his seat, though unnervingly.
“Hey Jake, can I steal your friend for a few minutes?”
“Sure, good morning to you too, Lucas.” He responded; Abby smiled at him reassuringly.
“Hi, sorry I didn’t text you back. You won’t believe what I am about to tell you. Immediately after I grabbed dinner, I fell off the couch. I was woken up by my father. He didn’t like the sight in front of him, but he had no choice. Anyway, that is not why I pulled you away from your friend.” He said as they walked to his car.
“Okay, that sounds bad…I mean your father found out you went out to drink.” She stuttered.
“No problem, my father is probably used to the way I behave. I am here because I got you something. I know it is not much, but I saw it on my way back home, and I thought you would like it.” He said, retrieving a box from his glove compartment and giving it to her.
“What is in here?” Abby asked curiously.
“You should open and see for yourself,” he said with a smile pestered on his lips, and Abby carefully reached for the box, opened it, and exclaimed at the sight in front of her.
“This is too expensive; I can’t accept it.” She said, giving the box back to him.
“Oh, come on, I bought this specifically for you. Please don’t say no, it is a humble gift from me, it is nothing.” He said, stuffing the necklace in her hands.
“Okay, I can’t wear this around though.”
“It is a gift from me. You can wear it whenever you feel like it, but this is a forgiveness gift from me. I am asking you to kindly accept my gift.” He said and took it from her, asking her to turn around. Abby held her hair to give him access.
“It looks beautiful.” She said as she admired herself in the mirror.
“Yeah, I figured out you would love it.” He said with a smile. “But that is not all. I have a surprise as well. Could you please buckle up?”
“Where are we going?” she asked, confused.
“You will see when we get there, you and I are skipping school today.” He said with a grin on his face.
Abby had never skipped school in her life and the thought of her skipping school excited her. She was looking forward to seeing how it all went, so she agreed to skip school, strapping on her safety belt. She smiled and urged him she was okay with the plan, only if they came back in time for the second lesson, she didn’t plan on skipping the rest of the day.
