But the way he was staring at me assured me that I had heard him just fine. Across the table, Pilar sat, stunned and horrified, frozen in place. Then she let out a shrill giggle. “Oh, you are kidding. You must be kidding, right?” Louis gave her a cold look that would have shriveled a more intelligent woman in her seat.
