—•STORMY•—
“Stormy! Stormy!” the head maid called my name for what felt like the hundredth time this morning.
I hurried to her side to help her, dodging between rushing maids and clattering trays.
The palace kitchen was a mess of noise and movement.
Everyone was rushing around, trying to get everything ready for the Alpha King Thorne’s twin sons’ welcome party tonight.
Their names were Jace and Julian, but everyone in the pack called them the Thorne brothers.
They had returned yesterday after finishing their warrior training, and the Alpha King Thorne had decided to throw a huge party tonight to celebrate their return.
Everywhere I turned, someone was shouting orders or running with trays.
I was bringing out the pots they needed for cooking when one of the senior maids called out, “Stormy! Get the plates ready!”
“Okay!” I shouted back, dropping the pots by the stove before running toward the dish corner.
The plates were stacked high, and I started setting them one by one on the counter.
My hands moved fast, but my mind started to drift to the Thorne brothers.
I hadn’t seen them since they returned yesterday.
It had been two years since they left for their warrior training.
I still remembered the day they rode out of the palace, both of them tall, confident, and smiling at everyone who cheered for them.
I was just a maid, standing in the corner like everyone else, trying not to stare too long.
I was afraid that if I stared too long, someone might discover my secret.
A secret I had kept to myself for years.
I had a crush on the Thorne brothers.
I know it sounds silly for someone like me, a lowly maid, to fall for the twin princes, but I couldn’t help it.
They’re both so handsome and strong Alphas.
Jace has this calm, serious look that makes everyone listen when he talks, while Julian always has that playful smile that can melt anyone’s heart.
Almost everyone in the kingdom admires them, both men and women alike.
Sometimes I catch myself staring too long when their names come up in conversation or when I catch sight of them.
As I worked, a small smile crept onto my face.
To me, today wasn’t just the princes’ welcome party.
It was also my birthday.
Nobody in the palace knew, and honestly, I didn’t expect anyone to.
I was just a maid, and birthdays didn’t really matter for people like me.
But still, it was special to me.
I turned eighteen today.
Tonight, I will finally find out who my mate is.
Part of me was nervous, but another part was excited.
I also hoped that maybe, just maybe, my wolf would come back today.
Ever since the rogue attack years ago, she had gone completely silent.
I haven’t been able to shift since then. Sometimes I wondered if she was still there at all.
But even without my wolf and not being able to shift, no one treated me differently. Everyone in the palace had always been kind, and that made things a little easier.
I’d been working in the Blood Moon Palace as a maid since I was twelve, ever since my family was attacked by rogues.
I still remembered the night of the rogue attack vividly.
It happened on my twelfth birthday.
That night, my parents and siblings were celebrating with me, and we were just about to cut my birthday cake when the rogues attacked.
That night changed everything.
The rogues killed my family and left me for dead, barely clinging to life.
It was the pack Beta, Asher, who found me while he was coming back from a run.
He carried me back to the palace and had the healer save me.
From that night on, the palace became my home.
I’ve lived and worked here ever since, and every day I thank the Moon Goddess for letting me survive that night.
I don’t know what I would have done if Beta Asher hadn’t found me, or if the healer hadn’t been able to save me.
That night changed everything, but it also gave me a second chance.
“Stormy! Come blow the stove!” the head maid yelled again.
“I’m coming!” I shouted and hurried over.
By the time afternoon wore on, my hair was sticking to my face, and my hands were covered in flour and grease.
The kitchen smelled of stew, roasted meat, and baked bread, a mix that made my stomach growl even as I worked.
We didn’t stop working until evening.
By the time the sky turned orange, my clothes were filthy, my arms ached, and my apron was covered in stains and ashes.
I was so exhausted I could barely stand, but I still had to get ready for the welcome party.
Wiping the sweat from my forehead, I muttered, “I need a bath. I can’t go like this.”
I left the kitchen and walked toward the maid quarters.
As I neared the dim hallway, I heard soft sounds that made me stop.
At first, I thought someone was crying, but as I got close the noises became clearer.
Someone was moaning.
My stomach twisted, and I froze for a moment.
Then, carefully, I leaned around the corner to see what was happening.
My heart skipped a beat when I saw Julian pressed against a woman, kissing her deeply.
I couldn’t make out the woman’s face in the shadows, but I could see how close they were, his hand resting on her waist while her fingers tangled in his hair.
They slowly pulled back from the kiss, their foreheads resting against each other.
“Mmhmm… Julian, I missed you,” the woman said softly.
“I missed you too,” Julian murmured before pulling her back into another kiss.
I stood there like an i***t, unable to move.
My chest stung, though I couldn’t understand why.
Was it jealousy? Maybe it was, or maybe it wasn’t, but either way, it hurt.
The woman pulled away and giggled. “When are you going to tell your father about me? I want everyone to know I’m your Luna.”
Julian smiled. “I’ll tell him after the welcome party.”
The woman squealed and threw her arms around Julian. “I love you so much, Julian. I thank the goddess every day that I got to meet you.”
“Me too,” Julian said, kissing her again.
That was enough.
I was tired of watching them being all lovey-dovey.
I turned on my heel and walked away quickly, my chest tight and heavy. I didn’t understand why it hurt so much. It shouldn’t.
I was just a maid, invisible to Julian.
He didn’t even know my name.
Nothing could ever happen between us.
I should forget about him and his twin, Jace, and focus on finding my mate today.
When I got to my room, I washed up and changed into my worn brown gown my mom had given me years ago.
Back then, it had been a little big, but now it fit me just right. It was still a bit tight around the chest, but it was the best I had.
I brushed my hair quickly, my hands trembling a little, and took a deep breath.
From outside, I could already hear the music, laughter, and cheers.
The party had started.
“Time to go,” I whispered to myself, trying to steady my racing heart.
I stepped outside, feeling the cool night air brush against my skin.
The sky was dark, and the first edges of the full moon were starting to appear, slowly rising and casting a pale silver glow over everything.
I tilted my head up and smiled, letting the quiet beauty of the night calm me for a moment.
“Tonight’s the night,” I whispered. “I’ll finally find out who my mate is.”
With that, I walked toward the party, my heart beating fast as the sounds of laughter and drums grew louder.
