CHAPTER 1 - THE EDGE OF CRESCENT RIDGE
Being one fifth of the only werewolf quintuplets in werewolf history would be fine, if we stayed in the same pack that we were born into. But unfortunately, that’s not the case here. If it was, I wouldn’t have anything to say. Life would be boring, dull…you know, normal. But unfortunately, my mother getting a great job as the Luna’s secretary at the Crescent Ridge pack is the reason for this big move. Two cars, mom and dad in one, us five in the other.
My name’s Kaia and I’m the youngest of the quintuplets. And to make it worse, I'm the only girl. We’re all still 17 and my father is a great warrior. So it wasn’t hard for them to give him a job as the warrior in this pack. Even if they are a bit concerned about having quintuplets in the pack. I know pack hierarchy and I know when people are concerned about having us around. Especially when they don’t know us and they think we are all evil and want to overthrow a pack.
Every move we make is news in the werewolf world, and apparently being “the only quintuplets in history” makes us either famous or cursed, depending on who you ask.
It’s pathetic, but that’s what they actually think. Instead of seeing a bunch of teenagers who are just trying to survive high school at the moment.
But we didn’t have a choice in anything that happened here so, here we are. We’re currently driving through the early morning fog on the gravel road through the forest that leads to the house that we have been given by the Alpha and Luna.
Kael’s driving like a soldier on patrol, he’s the oldest, eyes flicking to every shadow. Ryn’s in the passenger seat, tapping the dashboard like he’s counting down to trouble. Soren’s quiet — he’s always quiet — and Jace keeps taking photos out the window like we’re tourists.
Me? I’m in the middle seat, of course. The safest place for the fragile little sister. Cute, right? I let them think I need protecting; it keeps them calm.
“New pack, new people,” Jace mutters.
“Same paranoia.” I say, watching the sun peeking above the trees.
He didn’t seem to be the least bit concerned that we were starting over in a strange pack. He actually looked excited about it.
I could sense the tension coming off of Kael as he watched every movement in the forest and Soren, sitting right next to me, was tense in general. He didn’t like change. Especially not when it puts any of us, especially me, in danger.
Normally one of us would be sitting in the back of the SUV if it wasn’t full of suitcases and everything else that we had to haul here that wasn’t shipped ahead of time. While dad and mom were in their sedan.
The SUV is starting to smell like old coffee, wet clothes, and too much attitude. Five werewolf siblings packed into one car for six hours — sounds fun, right?
As soon as we pulled up outside the house behind our parents' car, we all got out and looked up at the massive two story house that looked brand new and just sitting there waiting for us.
“Is this right?” Kael asked.
“What do you mean?” Mom asked.
“We’ve never lived in a house this nice before.” Ryn said.
“They built it, just for us. It only took a month. Isn’t it beautiful?” Mom asked.
“A month? Watch out for booby traps.” Kael whispered to me, but I just smirked at him.
“I’m more concerned about hidden cameras.” I said.
“Yeah, that too. I’ll check as soon as we get inside.” He said.
We walked a little closer to the house when Kael and Soren were both suddenly beside me, grabbing either of my arms holding me in place.
I followed their gaze to the forest that was right beside the house and I saw men and wolves standing just beyond the treeline.
“They look like warriors.” I said.
“Why are they just standing there if they’re meant to be on patrol?” Soren asked.
“Because right now we’re the threat.” I said, looking back towards the house.
I could practically feel the tension coming off of the warriors that were watching us. None of them were comfortable with having us here. But I don’t care. I was used to it. People always stared. Even in our old pack that we grew up in. If the five of us were together, we were an attraction. It was just part of life for us now.
As I’m getting the suitcases out of the back of the SUV and placing them on the ground I saw a car approaching the house and it pulled up right out the front.
A man and woman got out of the car with two other men that were definitely guards. So I stood there and watched them.
They approached mom and dad and thanks to werewolf hearing, I didn't need to approach to hear what they were saying.
“Alpha Alaric. Luna Seraphine.” Dad said barring his neck to them in respect, mom following my dad’s motions.
“We just wanted to come and make sure that you arrived safely.” Alpha Alaric said.
“We sure did. Not a problem at all getting here.” Dad said, being very polite.
“Would you like to meet the children?” Mom asked. Alpha Alaric and Luna Seraphine but looked over to the five of us that were scattered around the front yard of our new house and they looked very hesitant.
“Maybe another time.” Dad said, quickly.
They almost look like they’re scared to breathe the same air as us. I really thought the Alpha and Luna would be different since mom is working with the Luna. But I guess I was wrong. I don’t know why I’m surprised or why I thought it would be any different.
“Hey pal, have you got a problem there?” Kael said, looking at one of the guards who hadn’t taken his eyes off of me since he got out of the car.
“Kael. It’s alright.” Dad said.
“No. It’s not. I don’t like the way he’s looking at Kaia.” Kael said.
“I’m sure he doesn’t mean anything by it. Just drop it.” Dad said, warning in his voice.
Kael looked at me and I shook my head, telling him not to do anything. He was just looking. I didn’t care. It wasn’t worth starting a fight with the Alpha’s personal guard over.
Someone else then got out of the car. A much younger guy, about our age, and he started looking at us as he leaned against his car looking bored.
I stopped what I was doing to look at him for a moment and his expression was unreadable. It was undetectable. I couldn’t figure out what he was thinking. But he was just like the guard. His eyes never left me for a second.
The first thing I really noticed about him was how much he looked like the Alpha. He had to be their son.
It wasn’t too late before people started walking towards the house for town. They were gathering near the house and they were all staring at us.
I looked back at the Alpha’s son and I felt it immediately. The intrigue in his eyes, the feeling that was different from what I usually got from strangers.
I knew immediately that he was someone I had to watch out for.
Kael, Soren and Ryn were soon by my side helping me with the bags, but I knew that was just an excuse. They just wanted to stay near me.
“Look at that. It’s true. The Moonborn. Five born under one moon.” One onlooker said.
I looked at the guys and they all had pretty much identical looks on their faces. They were being pretty typical.
Just as I grabbed my suitcase and I started walking towards the house I felt the ground tremble slightly under my feet.
I turned back to everyone else and they were all acting the same way. They didn’t seem to have noticed it. It was strange. I’d never felt anything like that before.
I looked up and the moon was very faint in the sunlight sky. Glowing brighter than it usually does when it’s visible in the day time.
“The moon’s watching.” I whispered to myself.
