36 - A Promise of Our Own

Katrina  Leo had Jude meet us in his office. Jude eyed us skeptically. “You told her?” he surmised. “You knew?” I asked him incredulously. He rubbed the back of his neck, his cheeks reddened. His only reply was a shrug and a pleading look to Leo. “I told him,” Leo confirmed, pouring us each a glass of whiskey. I did have to admire his office. The rows of dark wood shelves and the built-in bar felt like my dad’s almost, but with a modern take. It fit Leo, somehow. “When did you know?” I asked Leo. “The night of the auction.” I took a deep breath through my nose and a long sip of the whiskey that warmed my insides. “That makes… that makes sense.” “I didn’t want to keep it from you,” Leo went on. “I hoped you knew at first, and then I was waiting for you to figure it out yourself.”
