Prologue
City is such a tempting place to start anew, at least for someone seeking to be surrounded with presence. The constant changes around, the endless bustle down the street, the artificial scenery of an endless starry sky when looking up from the window of the tallest Skyscraper. Everlyse dreamed of it all, imagining a life, leading an average yet content routine. That was all she wanted to achieve, her naive mind wouldn’t dream of something too big.
Leaving the small abode where their family once lived is supposed to be heart wrenching, the attachment should be there but Everlyse wasn’t anything like that.
Everlyse thought she was attached to the people that once lived there and not of the place itself. She was attached to the memories. The constant presence of loneliness and despair only clouds her mind to think clearly where she would lead her life. And so leaving was the best option she got.
“Not bringing the furniture?” the landlady queried, her old figure slowly approaching, both hands resting on her back. “I did wonder why there were no pick up trucks parked outside, turns out yer’ leaving it all in there?”
Everlyse nodded. “Bringing it would make it more difficult to settle, I think.”
“You stupid child, what? Year’ making it more difficult by starting without anything.” she scolded.
“It’s uhm, my place isn’t big for those.” she bit the inside of her cheeks. She didn’t dare bring anything because the place was too cramped, not really a desirable size of a unit but Everlyse got what she paid for.
Starting her life in a city with nothing in hand makes her feel like some sort of poor and pitiful female protagonist that needs rescuing. Everlyse glowered at the thought.
It was nearing dawn when she finished packing and sorting things over and over again. She decided, the couch and appliances should stay. Well, she can’t just barge in a public vehicle carrying a whole set of fans and tv? She’s sometimes crazy but not that level of crazy, and shameless.
That night was fruitless, tossing of tossing until the sun peeked from the slit of the curtain and she’s still trying to sleep. In the end she made the bed, not that it was crumpled, just the top layer of sheet from her endless movements prior to the night.
When it was time to leave, Everlyse went without looking back.
