FROM the windows of her bedroom at her parents’ house, Janni saw her mother placing a duffle bag in the backseat. Her eyes went back to the monitor of the laptop. A frown marred her face at the numbers she was seeing. She closed the browser before she shut down the computer. She went out of her room. She found her mom in the kitchen. She was seated beside the island counter. There was a smartphone in her hand. “Breakfast, baby?” When she nodded, her mother stood up and reheat the plate on the countertop. Jannie also made herself a cup of coffee. She forked the scrambled egg before she grabbed the hashbrown. She finished it in three bites. “Where is mama going? I saw her leaving.” Her other mother put the mobile phone down. She pushed the eyeglasses higher before looking at her.
