Elinor was pretty clear about her feelings towards her mother. They were estranged and not important to each other. That conclusion wasn't baseless and Elinor took quite a lot of time to come up to that. However, everyone did not have the luxury of having a sorted life like hers. The next morning, Elinor switched on her phone and was taken aback by the number of messages piled on the screen.
