Lizzie had dozed off on the couch, while Phin had collapsed on a nearby chair. When she awoke, she stretched her sore neck. Trent sat at Edward’s bedside, his gaze never wavering from his father. Lizzie’s heart broke all over again. She knew there was little love lost between the Younger siblings and their father. ​She’d heard the stories—from both Trent and other people—and the only reason she had any interest in being around Edward Younger was because of Trent. She went to stand behind him, her hand on his shoulder. He took her hand but didn’t say anything. They watched Edward breathe: slow, shallow breaths, punctuated by the sounds of the machines.
