Your mother was trying to leave, the phrase continually repeated itself in Lacey's mind over and over again, long after Agnes had gone. She'd left her new address with Lacey and a phone number, asking her to keep in touch as Lacey said she would, even if it took a little while, some of her still annoyed at Agnes's treatment of her.
