“Do you have any idea what you’re saying?” I asked, my arms crossed. “What do you mean?” Jake had the nerve to act oblivious, and it unnerved me to no end. “I mean to say that you’re blaming mom for a cross that shouldn’t have been hers to bear. You’re one impossible man,” I told him in a strong voice.   “Do not speak that way to your dad, Annabelle,” mom chided me. “I will speak to him this way because he deserves it,” I told her, shifting my gaze to her face.   Somebody ought to tell you that you ain’t all that, and you don’t get to boss mom around.
