|| Rowan's POV ||
I sat in my study all alone. Mom and dad already left for their beach house. So did Ely. She went back to the North.
Papers laid before my table. The crisis was rising again. Just when we thought we could breathe, Uncle Cassian found five hidden hideouts of the rogues who didn't smell like a rogue in human form. f**k those bastards! How on earth they managed to pull such tricks was beyond me.
My uncles were busy planning invasions on the new rogue hideouts whereas my other cousins were more interested in showing off their status than ruling, living in the moment.
Another sigh left my lips. This study used to be so full when Dad was the king. Everyone supported his ascent back then whereas everyone left the castle one by one after I took the crown. It seemed like my family was spreading thin. And among my generation, I was the only one to shoulder the responsibility of Arkandale.
Only if you were with me, Elra! I whispered, gulping down the glass of whiskey. Maybe things would have been different.
The pain of broken bonds had become nothing but a dull numbness in my heart. I closed my eyes, expecting the nightmare to appear before my eyes like it always did.
That cursed cliff.
Micheal and Elra… and a sharp knife before Michael jumped into oblivion taking Elra with him forever!
Instead, silver hair came to my sight. Selene, standing before the woods, wind blowing her wild hair which looked like silver threads. Her eyes looked fiercer than ever. It was the very first time I saw her.
I opened my eyes instantly. Why would that image even occur to me? How could she even consume a bit of my thoughts?
I inhaled to calm my nerves only to be welcomed with her maddening flowery scent. Winter lillies… that's how she smelled. Fresh and wild.
Fuck it! I even smelt like her. Because of what we did last night. And that scent wouldn't go away no matter how much I showered.
Her sharp eyes kept flashing on the back of my mind. Her defiant gaze despite her trembling lips twisted something inside my chest.
Why the hell do I care? Stop f*****g think about her! I rubbed my face, as if I was trying to erase her from my vision, from my skin.
A knock grabbed my attention and then the door opened without my order. I looked up to find Soren walking in.
“What now?” I asked, annoyed. He was the royal Beta, my right hand and my partner in every crime I did since my childhood. We were close and hence there were no formalities between us.
“Don't give me that look!” He said as he lounged on the chair opposite to me.
“I have a lot on my plate, Soren,” I reminded him. “These rogues are driving me to insanity.”
“About that, I found something on the rogues you encountered last night. Take a look!” He slid down a paper towards me.
I read through the pages quickly. My eyes narrowed.
“It seems that some packs are helping them.” Soren added. “Near the Northern Border.”
“Again?” I rubbed my face.
“Seems like it.” Soren nodded.
“But why? Why would they help the rogues?” I wondered.
After the last war, whoever sided with the rogues saw the worst time. The packs were taken down, the alphas were held hostage. She wolves were taken for breeding. To think that they would go for it again seemed highly unreasonable.
“Well, they did it before. Money… power and many more things, Rowan. But the question is which packs are involved.” Soren said.
“And how do we identify them!” I muttered. It was hard to distinguish those packs last time.
“Leave this between us for now, Soren. And send someone to keep an eye on the borderland packs.” I added. “I have to let Dominic know as well. Since it's the border, it affects both our territories.”
I stood up from my chair. So did Soren.
“Where are you going?” He asked.
“I will go to the North myself and inspect the borders on my way too.” I replied.
I wondered if Selene would like to come along. She might like to visit her brother.
Why the f**k even I think of it?
The further I stayed from that woman would be better.
“And you are going there yourself?” Soren raised an eyebrow.
“Yes, lesser people know, better it is.” I replied.
“You are just looking for an excuse, aren't you?” Soren laughed.
“What?” I furrowed.
“Dude, if you want to spend more time with your luna, just say so. You don't have to travel that far to the borderlands.” Soren smirked.
“Did I suggest that I will take her with me?” I frowned.
Yes I thought of it but never spelled it out.
Soren laughed again, “I saw her leaving for the north right before I came here. Asked the guards. They said she asked for a car and some supplies for a long road trip.”
“What? Why didn't you say that before?” I jumped.
“I assumed she told you already. After all, you smell like her. And your scent was all over her.” He smiled.
“Stop joking. She didn't tell me a thing!” I growled. “How the hell did she get access to the car in the first place? And supplies?” I yelled as I walked out of my chamber. My feet dragged me to the staircase faster than I imagined.
“I heard your mother gave her the token of Luna Queen. So the palace is under her command technically.” Soren spoke thoughtfully. “But wait. Why would she leave right after you two had s*x? Don't tell me you couldn't satisfy her last night!”
“Shut the f**k up, Soren!” I yelled. How dare he question my capabilities? “And when the f**k mother gave her the token?”
“How would I know? Isn't she your mate? You're supposed to know all these shits!” Soren shrugged.
Yeah, she was my mate by name. We didn't share any connection, not even a mind link and I didn't even care less about any of it. But I couldn’t possibly let her leave!
A weird void hit my chest. Panic rose in my heart. There were rogue activities around the border. What if she gets caught in the middle? What if she gets hurt?
Why the f**k do I even care!
