|| Selene's POV || I pressed my lips together, my hand pulled a fist. Stop it, Selene. Stop thinking about him for a second. He had said he hated me. He had said he wanted to torture me, even kill me, slowly, day by day, as punishment for what he believed I had done to Elra. I sigh left my lips. I closed my eyes. And then he appeared in the woods just when I needed him, had carried me out of a river, wrapped me in his shirt, and taken me apart so completely that I had forgotten my own name. Which version was the lie? Fine… sulking here wasn't helping either way. So, let's just ask him to his face and get done with it. I finally raised my fist to knock. Just as my fist was about to touch the door, it opened on its own and my fist knocked on a very hard and refined chest instead of the wooden door. Damn it, Selene! My eyes looked up to meet him instantly. Rowan stood there, with a cold gaze swiping me off. My fist was still touching his chest. “Rowan!” I gasped. “Is that a new trick to touch me?” He muttered. “What? No… I was just about to knock…” I tried to cover up. Why did it have to be so awkward? “And you opened the door so suddenly.” “Oh, so do I need your permission now to open the door of my own study?” He asked. “No… Why are you being so difficult?” I huffed. “I just wanted to talk.” “Get in!” He ordered before he stepped away, unblocking my path. I stepped inside the study. His minty scent filled my nose instantly. And suddenly coming here felt like a bad idea. I stood facing the huge mahogany desk that was at the center of the room. I could feel his gaze on my back. He was standing right behind me but I couldn’t find the courage to turn and face him somehow. Ah… Selene… be steady. He is just another man. Before I could speak, his voice rang over my shoulder, “what the f**k are you doing here?” I turned slowly. My eyes widened at his tone. “Do you really think making my Lycan go wild with your pheromone will help you to become my mate? Then you are delusional!” His voice echoed in the room. All the hope I held in my heart shattered. So it was all my pheromone and his wild beast couldn't stay in chains. It wasn’t him after all. A bitter smile rose in my lips. What the hell was I even thinking! That he cared? I took a deep breath, my eyes hid all the emotions like I learned to do all my life. Looking at his eyes, I said, “I came to thank you for saving me from the rogues. And thanks for your services last night. I will pay you in a way or another. Let me know what you want. Money, gold, lands…” “What did you just say?” His eyes narrowed at me. “I will get going. Carry on with your kingly business. Rest assured, I won't cause any more inconvenience to you.” I replied as I intended to walk out of his study. But Rowan blocked my path. “Step aside, Rowan,” I ordered. “Do you think you can come and go as you please?” He growled. His hand shot up, and went for my throat. Using his speed, he cagged me between the huge desk and him. His grip wasn't tight or hurtful like the first night, instead it was somehow seductive. Or was I becoming delusional? His thumb trailed up to my chin, sending sparks to my skin. He leaned forward before he sniffed my neck, “this pheromenon trick of yours won't work again.” What pheromone? I wasn't in heat right now. Or was I? His breath brushed the side of my neck, sending a tingling sensation through my veins. Damn him for making me feel all of it at once. My heart raced at our proximity, my mind could only think of all the dirty possibilities we could end up here. On the table… or on the couch… maybe against the bookshelves! No, Selene… don't give in. “Leave me alone, Rowan. Stay away from me!” I said, keeping my voice eerily calm as I placed my hands in his chest, trying to push him away. “Stay away? Wasn't it you who begged me to f**k you last night?” He gave me a crooked smile. “I was in heat and I would have asked any passing male the same thing.” I replied, looking into his eyes. A low growl escaped his lips as he said, “you wouldn't dare!” I chuckled, “whether I would or not is none of your damn business.” “Say that again!” He gritted his teeth. His grip on my throat tightened a little. His eyes became darker as if he wanted to pin me down right here on his desk, and make me apologize for what I just said. “I said, my s*x life is none of your damn business. So leave me alone!” I snapped. “You are my queen, Selene.” He reminded me. “A queen without a mark, remember?” I laughed. “You said you will never touch me Rowan. But looking at you now, it seems like you want the opposite. Don't tell me you are already regretting your words.” He lost his grip instantly, stepping away as he barked, “I want nothing to do with you. Nothing f*****g at all.” “Fine!” I snapped. “Try to stick to what you said.”
