The next morning is Sunday. That means church, of course. I put on my Sunday-best dress and shoes. Granny and I climb into Uncle Billy"s pickup, and the three of us make our way toward town and then on to the church. Normally, there"s a feeling of peace in the crowd as we settle in the pews and wait for the preacher to come through the door by the altar. Today, the air feels crackly. I look at Granny to see if she"s feeling the same thing. She has a grim expression on her face, but she pats my hand to show she"s sensing the same thing.
