LEAH I stepped out of the guest room, my heart thudding. This was it; the moment I had been secretly dreading and hoping would somehow never actually arrive, despite its importance. But here it was, and I was supposed to go along like everything was perfect. My father was waiting there in the hall, his face stretched into a smile that might’ve looked genuine if I hadn’t just heard his threats moments before. The fact that he could switch so easily, so seamlessly, made my stomach turn. But then I saw her—Sarah. My sweet, loyal sister. The sight of her immediately calmed me, her presence a reminder that I wasn’t totally alone, that I was doing this for a very good reason, and that it would all be worth it in the end when I finally got out of this marriage and ran off with her. I sigh. In
