"I...I don't understand," Cassie says in a choked whisper as she struggles to breathe. "We tried to use some of the spells before, but they won't work. How are you able to use the spells without completing the ritual?"
I shrug. "I suppose I am more special than you realized." I pick up Emma and head for the stairs.
"Chloe, don't leave me down here!" she cries out, her voice desperate.
I stop in my tracks and turn around, Emma still in my arms. "Goodbye, Cassie," I say, my voice hard as steel.
Then, without a backward glance, we leave Cassie behind, her screams and pleas echoing in the gloom as we start the long climb back to the surface.
The sunlight greets us as we emerge from the tunnels, and I take a deep breath of fresh air.
Now, I need to deal with Adrian and Margaret.
