Late Talks and Predictions

Jasper made it home in two hours. He found his dad was awake and had gotten the call from his mom, and at twelve in the morning him and his dad got pancakes. William looked at his son for a moment, his pale, younger version of him with blonde hair. “Son…I was hurting from your mother cheating on me. Hell, my pride was hurt, and even worse you’d seen me at my weakest. I couldn’t lie or hide why we were over. You saw it, and I know you heard it.” William exhaled as he looked at his son, “But even knowing what I know now, and how’d we end. I’d still see your mom one random day riding her bike, her hair glowing in the sun and still get her to stop. Because it was that day, I made the best decision of my life. I met the woman who gave me the best thing that’s happened to me.” Jasper looked at his dad happily and William gently put his hand on his son’s arm, “You don’t have to push her out of your life because your angry and hurt for us both. You can still be angry and hurt for yourself and work on your relationship with her. But holding on to mine as well is going to hold you back.” Jasper shrugged a little, “It’s not like I try to hurt her or punish her. It’s just…every time I see her face I have to remember that the last two years of all the bullshit we’ve dealt with was because of her. Of all the pain, and that empty feeling I got whenever someone asked about her. It’s just a lot.” William knew that and whispered, “I know. And I know it’s weird and uncomfortable sharing your mom with strangers, but no matter what happened between me and Yasmine, she will always be your mom. And you never know one day you might need her, or she’ll need you.” Jasper didn’t say anything else on the subject, so William didn’t either. But it’d been said and heard, so it was left to be stewed on. After breakfast they went home, and both went to crash immediately. Jasper was happy to be home with his dad. But he couldn’t help but admit the other main reason he was so miserable on the reservation was because while some of the girls had been cute, they weren’t his Alaia. And Jasper’s heart sang with joy the moment she was catapulting herself into his arms cheering, “I missed you so much!” And then she was kissing him making him hard as she whispered his name against his lips. It started to get a little too hot though, so Stella cooled them down as she walked into his house with a spray bottle filled with ice water. “Cool it down you animals.” Jasper and Alaia both laughed as AJ tackled Jasper in a bear hug, “Dude you gone for a week is equivalent to a month for us! How you been?” Smiling, Jasper accepted he was missed as his hugged Stella and they all went into the living room. Stella and AJ didn’t ask about Jasper’s time with his mom out of knowing it probably wasn’t a good one. But Alaia did out of concern for him and wondering if he wanted to talk about it. “Did everything go okay at your mom’s?” Jasper didn’t want to lie to his girlfriend, so he told her the truth, “I kind of blew up on her husband and stormed out in the middle of dinner.” Alaia didn’t seem surprised but instead of asking why asked, “Are you okay?” AJ watched his friend melt as he shook his head only to get a silent embrace of comfort.   It was a chill night after that moment though, Jasper didn’t want to let Alaia go and she left late but he didn’t care. He had needed to be selfish after being away from her for six days and wanted nothing but to be in her presence. Breathe in her scent, kiss on her neck, and for a while everything felt at peace. But of course, life was never all good or bad. There was a balance, and it tipped that night. As an old shaman in her rocking chair froze as the clock stuck midnight. A rain came pouring down from nowhere, her cross on her wall began to bleed, and the white crescent moon seemed to be tinged pink. Gasping as the prophecy long since hidden from time began, Jasper was left unaware of his changing fate as he sat in his window seat thinking.
