Celeste
I barely slept last night.
Maybe an hour broken into little pieces but every time I closed my eyes, I felt it again.
Jared’s hands, his mouth on mine, his touch all over my body, the taste of him.
It was starting to make me go crazy.
My lips still felt swollen and my throat a little bit too sore and the thought alone made my core jitter in desire.
Course Jared HarlenZ
My mind wouldn’t stop racing.
What did it mean? Was yesterday also another moment of madness.
Another mistake.
But my body hummed with the memory. I felt shaky and wired all at once.
I dragged myself out of bed got dressed on autopilot and went to the cafe.
Eric took one look at my tired face and just shook his head. “Rough night?”
“You have no idea,” I mumbled.
I prepared the Harlan Corp order my mind barely there.
The usual large coffee, the pastries as my heart was a frantic bird in my chest.
How do I face him after what happened last night. What would I say to him? What would he say to me? Would he even be there? Would he pretend it never happened?
The walk to his office felt different was nothing short of nightmare.
I rode the elevator up my stomach in knots.
The doors opened to the quiet reception area.
The secretary gave me her usual polite impersonal nod. “He’s in a meeting. You can just leave it on his desk.”
Oh thank god!
A weird mix of relief and disappointment washed over me. I wouldn’t have to face him not yet at least.
“Okay thanks,” I said softly.
Befor I could reach his office I bumped into thr last person iexpected.
It was Isabella.
I fought the urge to role my eyes
She was wearing a sharp blood-red pantsuit, her heels clicking on the floor with a short she cruel smile on her face.
“Well look who it is,” she said, her voice a sugary sneer. “The poor delivery girl, or should I say a w***e that wants to f**k her way to the top.”
I clenched my jaw saying nothing.
I just wanted to get past her.
“What’s the matter?” she asked stepping further blocking my path to the door. “Cat got your tongue? Or are you just realizing how pathetic you look holding a box of donuts in the middle of a billionaire’s office?”
“I’m just doing my job,” I said my voice flat. “Excuse me.”
“Your job,” she repeated laughing. It was an ugly sound. “Is that what you’re calling it? This is sad Celeste. Really, truly sad. You followed Ethan across the country and when that didn’t work you latched onto his step-daddy? What’s the plan? Deliver coffee and pastries until he feels so sorry for you he writes you a check? Or seduce him and maybe get pregnant for him so you could tie him down to you?”
Her words were like little needles aiming for all my weak spots. “I didn’t follow anyone and I don’t f*****g care about the money you think after, I am more than satisfied of the life I’m living now.”
“Sure you don’t,” she said rolling her eyes “Let me tell you what I think Celeste, I think you’re here because you’re a loser a f*****g cheap slut with no education, no family, no money. You work in a coffee shop and you see what Ethan has… what Jared has… it something you could only ever dream of having. You think if you hang around long enough, looking all sad and helpless, one of them will take pity on you and give you a taste of this life.”
She gestured around the lavish office.
I hissed biting of my lower lip, the last thing I want is creating a scene in Jareds office.
“Isn’t that true you w***e!” She spat in irritation, “i know why you’re really here, Celeste…You want Ethan back. You’re hoping seeing you here, being around his family, will make him remember what you had and you think you can win him away from me and win his family… well that won’t work”
The idea was so ridiculous so far from the painful, complicated truth, that I almost laughed. “I don’t want Ethan, you can have him for all I care… I would never want him back after what he did, what you both did, he already made his choice and I respect that.”
Her smile vanished. Her eyes turned cold and hard. “You’re a liar!!! A poor, jealous liar. You see him with me a woman who actually belongs in his world and it kills you. You’ll never have him back you b***h! He’s mine. He was always mine, even when he was wasting his time with you he just didn’t realize it”
The old hurt flared but it soon did down, they both weren’t worth my anger, “Congratulations. You can have him. He’s all yours.”
I tried to move around her but she shifted blocking me again.
“You think you’re so clever,” she hissed. “Coming here getting this little delivery job. Trying to get close to my baby too? My God you’re so ambitious, I’ll give you that but it ends now. I’m not letting some pathetic barista mess up my plans… I’ll make sure you lose your job”
“What are you talking about?” I asked,m my patience snapping.
“I’m talking about you getting fired,” she said, her voice dropping to a low, mean whisper. “I will make sure Ethan gets you fired, he knows your a disruptive, unprofessional little gold-digger, trying to cause trouble for him and his family… and your little coffee contract will vanish. Your boss will get a call and mind you, you’ll lose this job.”
“Oh please, you can’t just get me fired for no reason.”
“I can and I wil” she said, smiling again.
I hissed
She leaned in close her perfume suddenly suffocating. “You don’t belong here, Celeste. In this office, In this building, In this city. You’re a sad reminder of a life Ethan outgrew and I’m going to make sure you’re erased from it for good.”
And with that, she gave me one last victorious smirk then turned and walked out on me.
