CHAPTER 1 ##TRIGGER WARNING## As I lay in the narrow confines of a single bed nestled within one of the dimly lit, unused warrior rooms on the bottom floor of the packhouse, I propped myself up on my elbows. The air felt thick, heavy with a lingering tension, as a man in his forties finished slipping on his trousers, his movements betraying a sense of casual indifference. When he turned to face me, his gaze lingered with an unsettling interest. "Your father never mentioned just how sweet you were," he said, a sly grin creeping across his face. "If I had known a sixteen-year-old could possess such allure, I would have made my way here much sooner. Here’s a little something for you," he added, tossing a handful of crumpled bills onto the tattered blanket that enveloped me. I sat up fully, the rough fabric clinging to my skin, as he exited the room with a casual dismissal. A chill swept through me, my thoughts racing, and as I turned back, my eyes fell upon the deep crimson stains soaking into the mattress, a stark contrast against the faded fabric. Blood trickled down my legs, a physical reminder of the pain I was trying to suppress. With a trembling hand, I began to get dressed, each movement jarring against the ache in my stomach. My heart pounded in my chest as I reached for my phone, which lay innocently on the bedside table, a small beacon of hope in this disquieting moment. ME - Bella, meet me outside. We leave tonight. I knew that tonight was going to be the best chance I had of getting out of here. Dad was away from the packhouse with a lot of his warriors at a party, apparently they agreed on some kind of negotiation with an alpha of a nearby pack. There would only be a couple of warriors watching the border. It had to be now or never. As I finished putting on my clothes, I stood up, the fabric brushing against my skin, and walked to the door. Pressing my ear against the cool wood, I strained to listen, catching the sound of the old man’s retreating footsteps echoing softly through the house. Beyond that, there was a profound silence, as if the very air held its breath. I cautiously opened the door, the creak of the hinges breaking the stillness, and stepped into the living room, only to be met with an eerie emptiness. My heart quickened as I drifted through the adjoining rooms, my steps echoing in the vacant spaces, but everyone had vanished without a trace. Undeterred, I made my way towards the front door, my bare feet brushing against the cool floorboards, a chill creeping up my spine as I noticed I had neither shoes nor a jacket. The thought barely registered; I was driven by an inexplicable impulse. With a gentle push, I opened the door, quietly letting it close behind me. The night air struck me like a sharp gust, biting through the thin fabric of my sleeveless white nightgown, and I shivered involuntarily. Yet I pressed on, descending the steps with determination, crossing the threshold of the familiar yard, and heading straight toward the imposing silhouette of the large house next door. As I neared the property, illuminated by the soft glow of porch lights, a young brunette emerged from within, her attire a stark contrast to my casual wear. She halted in her tracks, her wide eyes locking onto mine, freezing in surprise as our gazes met amidst the stillness of the night. Bella and I have shared a deep friendship for countless years, intertwined not only by our bond but also by the steadfast camaraderie between our fathers, who are inseparable. The torment I endure is perhaps a shade more intense than what Bella faces, yet the distinction seems trivial when set against the backdrop of our suffering. She bears the cruel wrath of her father, just as I do, and the urgency for us to break free from this nightmare weighs heavily upon us. There is absolutely no way I would ever consider leaving her behind. The thought alone sends chills down my spine; without me, they would undoubtedly unleash unspeakable horrors upon her, relentlessly probing for my whereabouts, or worse, deriving twisted satisfaction from her agony. The danger of abandoning her is too immense to fathom. Bella is not just my friend; she is the anchor in my turbulent life, the one person I have cherished who has remained a steadfast presence amidst the chaos. Together, we must find a way out. The crimson liquid stained my legs, a disturbing reminder of the chaos that had unfolded. Bruises marred my face, whispers of the violence I had endured. I seized Bella’s trembling hand, pulling her into the shadowy forest where words were unnecessary—her fearful eyes spoke volumes. As we plunged into the underbrush, Bella glanced back, realizing that this is the last time she was ever going to see this place, a whole new life is ahead of us, no more abuse from her father. As I plunged deeper into the forest, my legs felt like lead, growing heavier with each frantic step. Gnarled branches reached out like skeletal hands, while fallen logs blanketed in moss impeded my flight. Despite knowing these woods my entire life, their secrets eluded me—every rustling leaf whispered warnings I couldn’t grasp. The potent drugs dulled my senses, yet the haunting sounds of pursuit ignited a fierce determination. I was achingly close to freedom; retreating was not an option. In a moment of dread, I realized Bella had fallen behind, struggling to keep pace. Without hesitation, I rushed back, grasped her hand tightly, and urged, “Come on, we have to hurry!” I knew if the patrols caught her, their merciless judgment would seal her fate. My mind raced back to the secret hours spent memorizing their routes; that knowledge could mean the difference between life and death. I knew we had a clear path to the border, the stillness of the night surrounding us like a heavy blanket. The crisp air and twinkling stars illuminated our desperate escape. As we finally reached the border, a few meters ahead of us was a road and I could see the metal of a car sitting on the side of that dirt road. I put Bella in the passenger seat and I got in the front seat where the keys were waiting for me and I started it. I put my foot down on the gas and we sped down that road and out onto the highway, leaving the pack and our old lives in the distance. Communicating with each other as we finally made our escape. But we weren’t done yet. We drove for a couple of hours before we got to a town and I had to make a stop in town at the hospital before we got back in the car and headed back to the highway that was surrounded by the forest. As Bella and I stood by the side of a deserted highway, we were gazing at the old car that was our savior that helped us escape. Inside the front seat were two deceased girls, anonymous Jane Does from the morgue, scheduled to be buried in unmarked graves since no one had claimed them. I had switched their dental records, and I noticed Bella standing beside me, shaking with fear. She was really scared about what we were doing, but it was our only option to ensure we could remain hidden from the pack forever. I poured gasoline over the car, then lit a match and tossed it inside. The interior erupted into flames as we pushed the car off the road, sending it down a ditch and crashing into a thick tree to make it look like a tragic accident. “You said you got those bodies from the morgue?” Bella asked. “Yeah, that's right,” I replied. “Are you sure you didn’t kill them?” She questioned. “Who the hell do you think I am?” I snapped. “I just had to make sure,” she said calmly. “Bella, we need to reject the pack right now so the timeline aligns. Our fathers will feel the bond severe, and they’ll believe we’re dead,” I explained. She nodded in agreement. We faced each other, both of us expressing what we needed to reject our pack, convincing our fathers that we were dead. I put my arm around Bella, and we began walking down the road, away from the car wreck that was fully engulfed in flames. We knew it wouldn’t be long before someone discovered the crash, so we had to hurry and get the hell out of there.
