CHAPTER 26: FROM THE PAST
His chest was palpitating, sitting on the apartment, and waiting for her girlfriend. Rereading the text inside his head over and over again filled him with grief, but Leon castigated himself.
‘My boyfriend wouldn’t find out.’
It’s now or never, and he must learn the truth.
When he heard a car was parked on the drive way, the anxiety came back. Each footsteps he hear, and the keys unlocking the door as it was pushed open made his stomach to churn.
“Oh my god!” A woman’s voice uttered with surprised. “Leon? Is that you?”
The light was soon turned on.
Leon stood up, and frankly he said, “Are you cheating on me?”
Elaine’s jaw dropped.
“Are you f*****g with me?” Disbelief was written all over her face. “Because I am tired enough to start a fight with you, Leon—”
“It’s just a yes or no, Ely.” He gritted his teeth. “Why do you keep lying?”
“And why do you still keeps insisting, when I told you over and over again that I am not?” Elaine scoffs. “You know what? It’s better if you should just go home, and I’ll take my rest then we’ll talk about it tomorrow—”
But he cut her off.
“My boyfriend wouldn’t find out.” Each words were emphasize.
Elaine was frozen.
“W—What are you trying to say?” His girlfriend gulps.
“And now you were stammering.” Leon licked his lips with anger. “Just f*****g admit that you have another man!”
“I told you that I have no one—!”
GASP.
He pinned her across the wall.
“Then whose the guy you just met right now, hmm?” He uttered with contempt.
“You…Are you following me?” The fear expression on Elaine’s face was replaced with shock that soon turned into anger. “You are sick! How dare you?!”
“Afraid that I’ll find out about your man?” He scowled at her.
“Ha! You know what I am so fed up about you being so controlling.” She barks off. “Maybe, it’s better if you f**k off, before I called the authority, Leon.”
She was glaring at him.
“Because right now, you look so f*****g desperate.”
“It is because of you!” His outburst made Elaine to stepped back. “It is because you keeps lying, and keeps meeting different men behind my back! Tell me… tell me why I couldn’t be enough with you. Just f*****g tell me, and be honest for the first time, Elaine.”
But he never expected what she said next.
“You wanted to know the truth?” Her eyes are ruthless, there are no regret he could feel. “It is because you are nothing. You may be a Montenegro, but you could not even gave me everything that you promised. You love me? But f**k Leon! I couldn’t see any future with you anymore... Your empty words, they just…I just lost it, when you were more busy trying to make your father proud than making me feel value.”
“I already explain to you—”
“But I don’t need those explanation, Leon.” Elaine meet his eyes. “And yes, I am cheating, because you couldn’t make me feel the same love anymore…”
“Elaine…”
“—and it’s better off, if we ended up our relationship before we hurt each other.”
“A—are you breaking up with me?” His hate dissipated.
“Yes.” Elaine looked at him sadly. “I am breaking up with you, Leon.”
That was the last time he saw her, when he left like a broken mess ready to explode. But he had least expected that in a few months they would run again with each other.
Had fate been playing with him this time? Or had its tricks already uprooted for his suffrage?
Leon Ryu Montenegro was sitting there among the alta-society, while feeling his heart being crushed into pieces. His fist clenched. His teeth gritted, seeing his own father laughing across to the stage as he announced his engagement. How can he married somebody, while he was still mourning for the death of his own mother?
Leah Jane Montenegro, who had just died a month ago, because she was terminally ill made the hate on his chest to bloom.
“Enough of the applause, I am sure everyone is curious about the woman I was talking about.” Alfred Montenegro, CEO of the Montenegro cruise line that was famously known across the world chuckled. Delight was plastered on his face, although he could feel Leon’s penetrating gaze that he chose to brush off. “Well, you may have known her or you may have not, but the amazing woman, who have captured my heart is….Elaine Leona Cortez.”
Murmurs echoed to the hall. Some seems curious, and a few only shook their head as the spotlight move, when the young Elaine appeared. Clad on a glittered dress that hugs her curves earned a few envy looks from the crowd. She was a smiling, a nervous smile until she finally reach Alfred.
“I am not that amazing, you know.” She giggled.
But as the two look to be into each other, Leon was shocked. He could feel his heart dropped, when he catch a glimpse of her face.
“This can’t be….” He trailed off in utter disbelief.
When Elaine roamed her eyes, their eyes meet.
Leon couldn’t stand it. He felt suffocated. He stood up, and began heading outside to breathe some air, ending up to the garden.
“f**k!”
This is so messed up. He thought.
“I’m just dreaming.” He chuckled. “This can’t be possible… Elaine, she couldn’t be, and my father—”
“But it’s all true.” A voice he was so familiar with speak.
“Get the hell out of here!” When he turned around, he wasn’t wrong either.
It is Elaine, his ex-girlfriend and now, his father’s fiancée.
“I just wanted to talk, Leon.” She said calmly. “I know that we have a rough past, but I wanted to clear up things with you, so that we could live in peace.”
“You wanted to f*****g clear up things?!”
“Yes.” Elaine coldly responded. It was as if she was already expecting his reaction. “This is for the better, now that your father and I are going to get married.”
“Can you even hear yourself, Elaine?” Leon was frustrated. “You sounded like a stranger. What happened? Tell me, did my father force you to marry him? Did he blackmailed you—”
“No.” The latter shook her head. “I love your father, and stop being senseless.”
“Look who’s talking.” He was full of sarcasm. “You love my father or perhaps, you were that desperate for the love of money that I couldn’t give you—”
But Leon’s mockery were stop by a slap on the face.
SLAP.
“Don’t speak ill to me again.” Elaine was purely mad. “You didn’t know what I was capable of.”
“Right…because you weren’t the same woman I knew before.”
With that said, Leon swatted her hand and walked away…just like the same he does. Running away, leaving until the pain became too much.
He was lost. Aggrieved by his mother’s death, he found himself walking to who knows where.
“What a mess up life.” He chuckled bitterly.
That’s when Leon heard a scream.
“p*****t! HELP!” It was coming from the alley.
He isn’t somebody, who usually stick his nose to somebody’s business. He didn’t wanted trouble, and after what happened to their house? Leon knew that his plate is full for another worry.
He turned his back, pretending as if he did not hear a thing, when rushing footsteps were heard, and they are coming to his direction in full speed.
“What that…” When he turned around, a young woman on her 20’s cling on his arms.
“Help me!” She demanded, trembling.
From where she came from, two drunk men laugh.
“Just gave her to us, and you wouldn’t need to be hurt, man.” One said, grinning.
“That’s right.” The other licked his lips.
“Oh god! I wouldn’t even go near you! You disgusting piece of s**t!” The woman’s mouth run brutally. She faced him. “Now beat their asses off!”
“What?” He raised his eyebrows at her. “Don’t boss me around.”
“What did you just say to us?!” The pair looks provoke by her insult.
But they were ignored by the two.
“I am ordering you to save me!” The woman’s nose flared.
“Then pay me.”
“W—what?” Russia, the woman who was being chase retorted. “Are you f*****g serious right now? Any sane person would save me!”
“Too bad, I am not like them.” Leon shrugged off his shoulder. “Perhaps, you can—”
“1 billion.” Russia gritted her teeth.
“What?”
“I’ll give you 1 billion in cash, if you manage to beat them whoever the f**k you are!” She barks with fury.
“Deal.” Leon chuckled, before facing the two men. “You heard her, right? A billion for your asses.” He whistled. “I am not broke, but the offer doesn’t seems bad either.”
“Go to hell!” One charge, he raise his fist, but Leon was much faster. The years of being in Dojo finally came handy.
He manage to avoid his attack, and swing his own fist to his jaw. The forced made the man stumbled on his feet, losing his balance to the ground unconscious.
Russia blink. She didn’t know whether to be amazed or what, “That was quick!”
“You bastard” Thinking that he can take down Leon, the other man took the opportunity to lunge, but Leon stepped aside leading for the man’s body to fell with a thud on the ground.
“Ahh.” He grunted.
“You should have been careful—” Leon raised his legs.
“Wait!” But Russia interfere. “Let me do the rest.”
“What?”
“Like this.” With that said, Russia giggled before she raised her own feet and kick the man between his legs.
A cry of pain was emitted, and same with his companion, he also fainted from the agonizing pain.
“That’s right, you fucker!” Russia both gave them a dirty finger.
“Now, where’s my 1 billion?” Leon extended his palms in demand.
“Tch. Don’t worry, I am not going to back up with my words.” Russia clicked her tongue.
She fished out her phone inside her jacket, and began clicking a few more, before lifting her head.
“Your name?” She asked.
“Why? I thought you said cash?” Leon squinted his eyes.
“Only if I have them, but don’t worry it is still the same amount.” She rolled her eyes.
Although suspicious, Leon crossed his arms and said, “It’s Leon… Leon Ryu Montenegro.”
“See? It isn’t that hard, and…..done!” Russia exclaimed.
Leon’s phone vibrated inside his pockets.
When he looked up, his eyes widened. The woman isn’t joking. His bank had just notified him that he had received a billion as of the moment.
“You’re kidding…” He was still in disbelief.
“Just get over with it, but thanks, and adios!”
Russia turned her back to leave only to get stop.
“Wait!” It’s Leon. “What’s your name?”
“It’s Russia…” She glanced over her shoulder with a wink. “Russia Rue De Asis, Mr. Montenegro.”
Leon felt his heart stopped, when she giggled at his reaction. Who wouldn’t be? Knowing that he had just met the daughter of one of the most notorious Sicilian mafia across Europe.
Russia Rue De Asis.
When Russia made sure that she is out of sight, she quickly hide herself. The playful expression disappeared, replaced by contempt.
She touch the wireless earpiece on the left side of her ears that has been placed there ever since.
“Mission accomplished.” She paused for moment. “—catching Leon Ryo Montenegro’s attention…father.”
