I leaned forward on the infirmary bed, eyes shut tight and lightly tapping my knuckles against my forehead.

Why couldn’t I think of the words? My brain kept freezing up when I tried to tell myself what exactly Hailey was to me.
When had it all become so complicated?
I’d always known Hailey was attractive. Her eyes had this sharpness to them, like she was constantly two steps ahead of everyone else in the conversation, but also glittered with laughter and kindness. And her smile…her smile had knocked the wind out of me the first time I saw it.
