Tyler Today hadn’t gone at all how I’d expected. And the photo of her father was the least expected part of all. When she’d asked about Mom, I’d been surprised, but I hadn’t minded. Derek never wanted to talk about her. She was a sore spot for him. He didn’t want to think about her, didn’t want to see pictures of her, it was like he wanted to erase her completely from his life. Part of me understood. It was hard to get past the pain of her being gone and remember the good times. And it was tough having the good times tainted with pain even when you could. But another part of me hated him for it. She was our mother. She’d been everything to us when Dad had been at meetings with other packs or doing patrols. She’d nurtured us and helped us become strong.
