Abigail eventually drifted into sleep with her breaths evening out against his chest. For the first time all day, Kai allowed himself to relax, but only a little. Her warmth against him should have been enough, should have soothed the gnawing unease clawing at his ribs. But it didn’t. Because even in sleep, she was still a flight risk. Slowly and very carefully, he loosened his hold on her, waiting until she shifted once and settled again.
