Kai’s car screeched to a halt in front of Saint Agnes Public Hospital. His heart was pounding so hard it hurt. He was out before the engine fully stopped, striding toward the sliding doors as if each second cost him blood. The lobby hit him like chaos in motion. People in wheelchairs, a wailing child clinging to his mother’s neck, orderlies pushing stretchers through narrow spaces. The air was sharp with antiseptic and faintly metallic. He made a beeline for the reception counter, leaning forward. “Abigail Mont—McGrath, she's my wife.” he said in a low and urgent voice. “She was just brought in.
