Chapter One

Bella This was it. Freedom. This small, beige room. With its narrow bed and pale wood desk shoved up under the window. It might not be much to look at but it was everything. Because it meant freedom. I was finally free. Flopping down on the narrow bed I stretched out my arms. If I had been laying in snow I would have made a snow angel. Either way I felt a sort of childish freedom I had only ever read about. Somehow , despite all the odds I had got a place at Nine Oaks. The one school in the world I had always dreamt of attending. There was just something about it’s gothic like architecture that appealed to me. And the stories that came out of it… damn. Those wild urban legends. What budding writer wouldn’t want to attend. It was going to be like being surrounded by inspiration. I was a freshman at Nine Oaks, and I was studying creative writing and English like I had always dreamt. Not the medicine my parents wanted me to study. I had been expected to follow in their foot steps but it had become clear that I would make the worst doctor in the world when I kept fairing at the sight of even the smallest needles. And don’t even get me started on blood… yuck. Rolling on to my stomach I reached for my phone, scrolling through the contacts until I reached the name I was looking for. He answered on the second ring. “Hey babes.” Bradley’s voice was clear but I still struggled to hear him. There was so much back ground noise that it sounded like he was in a party, at two in the afternoon. “Hey.” I sighed happily. I had been dating Bradley for close on three years. We had met in school and just clicked. When I had chosen to go to Nine Oaks instead of the university he choose we had both agreed we would make the long distance thing work. If anyone could it was us, after all. We were inseparable. “Are you all settled in?” I knew he was back home, not even left yet and it was a bone of contention between us but I could not refuse to attend early classes. Not when it was such a privilege to be asked to attend them. “Yeah my parents just left.” Over the phone someone laughed. A girly laugh and I sat upright. “Where are you?” “Just at some friends, how about you?” His voice dipped and there was a sudden silence as he drifted away from all the noise. “I’m in my dorm.” I smiled to myself. “Alone?” His voice had turned husky and I felt a blush creep up my cheeks. “Yes Brad but we aren’t doing that? You aren’t even alone…” a loud knocking on my door made me freeze. Why was someone knocking on my door? “How about later when I am alone babes?” I giggled. “Maybe, look someone’s at my door ok, I’ll ring you later. I miss you.” Wearily I rolled to my feet as the door knocked again. “Love you.” “Miss you as well Bella.” The girl on the other side of my door was tall, taller even than I was and I was pretty tall. Our similar heights were where our similarities ended though. Her hair was a bright shining gold where mine was almost black . She looked like a super model. And yet she was smiling at me like we were best friends. “Hi.” She said brightly , her Hollywood white smile never slipping. “I thought you would never answer. I’ve been waiting for ages. What were you doing?” Frowning I opened the door more, leaving on it heavily. Waiting ages? It had been less than a minute . “Hi sorry I was talking to my boyfriend.” Something flickered over her face, her eyes swept over me. And then her pink glossed lips pouted. It was almost like she thought I was lying. Which was dumb. I was just thinking to much. “I’m Bella.” My hand reached up and again her eyes slipped downwards. She didn’t take it instead she hugged me quickly. “I’m Abigail, but all my friends call me Abi.” She giggled. “And I can already tell we are going to be great friends. There’s not many of us here yet , so I just wanted to be one of the first to welcome you. If you need any help finding anything just let me know.” For a second I stared at her. “You’re not a first year?” “Second.” She flipped her long hair behind her shoulder. “ we are hoping to be sponsored into one of the off campus houses this year , so I’m not sure how long I will be in the dorm..”. She paused. “You should totally come tonight. We are making our plans on how to get accepted into the house of sins.” “House of sins? What’s that?” I felt like a total imbecile but I had no idea what she was talking about. She laughed loudly, “It’s the place to be. They never accept first year pledges but hey you can come and see how it’s done and apply next year.” Was she talking about a sorority? Did we even have those here? And did I really want to join one? Weren’t they all full of bitchy blondes? I eyed the blonde in front of me. Abi seemed nice enough. And she had been kind enough to invite me even though I was younger. I had to stop basing my life choice on bad movies. “I would love to. Thank you.” My first day at Nine Oaks and I had already been made to feel welcome. It would feel like home in no time. Closing the door softly , I sighed. I had made the right decision coming here. I just knew it. This was where I belonged.
