I was able to convince Trice to come with me to the wedding ceremony, though she refused at first. Put up a good fight, actually.
"I don't want to be anywhere near those people," she'd said firmly. "Especially not the sons."
But I kept pushing. Kept arguing. Kept pointing out that the more she stayed alone, the more she would think of her ex-boyfriend Marcus. The more likely she'd be to do something stupid like go back to him.
And that wasn't happening on my watch.
"You're coming with me whether you like it or not," I'd told her. "Besides, it means free food. Expensive, fancy food that we could never afford otherwise."
That had gotten a small smile out of her at least.
I went to my closet and brought out the dresses Nathaniel had gotten for me.
