I woke up to fluorescent lights and the smell of antiseptic.
A hospital. Again.
A nurse was standing beside my bed, smiling down at me with professional warmth.
"Welcome back," she said gently. "You gave those two men quite a scare."
I sat up slowly, my head still foggy. "What... what's wrong with me? Why did I faint?"
The nurse's smile shifted slightly, becoming more knowing. More careful.
"Well, Ms. Frederick, I have news. You're pregnant. Confirmed by blood test."
The words hit me like a physical blow.
Pregnant.
Confirmed.
Real.
The temperature in the room seemed to drop several degrees. My vision tunneled. The edges of everything went fuzzy and distant.
I could hear the nurse saying something else, but it came through like echoes. Underwater sounds.
