I watched in complete disbelief as Trice called out her account number—reading off the digits quickly, eagerly, like she was afraid Nathaniel might change his mind if she paused. And then, right there in my tiny living room, she received ten thousand dollars. Just like that. A few taps on a phone screen and more money than either of us had ever had at one time was hers.
My eyes kept snapping between Nathaniel and Trice. Back and forth. Trying to process what I was witnessing. Trying to understand how we'd gone from Trice sobbing about her terrible life and wanting to attack Nathaniel to... this.
Trice's demeanor suddenly changed completely. The tears dried up instantly. The anger evaporated. Her face transformed from devastated to delighted in the span of seconds.
