I couldn't sleep.
All through the night, I'd lain in bed staring at the ceiling, my mind replaying that phone call over and over. Derek's voice. The words that didn't make sense. "The CEO requested that you be fired."
Fired. Without explanation. Without even having the decency to meet with me first and talk about the project as planned which is supposed to be tomorrow.
Every time I closed my eyes, rage flooded through me—hot and sharp and consuming. This CEO who I'd never met, who'd threatened my job on Christmas morning and then abandoned the office because of some relationship drama, had now decided to just eliminate me from his company entirely.
Like I was nothing. Like my work didn't matter. Like I was disposable.
