I decided to stay back. I wouldn't attend the event.
Yvonne's threat was clear, and I trusted Yvonne just enough to know she meant every word. She would make my life miserable. Would find ways to humiliate me in front of Jackson's business associates, in front of the entire Bellamy empire. Would destroy me so thoroughly that I'd never recover.
Yeah, anyone who heard this would call me a coward. Nathaniel would probably be disappointed. Jackson would be hurt. Even I was disappointed in myself.
But it was better to be a coward than an object of mockery and shame. Better to hide than to face public humiliation at the hands of someone who had all the power and connections to actually destroy me.
