MELANIE
I put Penelope to sleep on the couch because there is no way in hell I’m returning to Val’s room, or even his bed, after what he just did, all the things he just said to me… He has no f*****g idea everything I’ve gone through just to stay here.
Weak? Me? To think that Brandon will be able to have his way with me after all the damage he’s already done, is that what they really think of me?
I suck in a deep breath, stretching my legs out on the couch as I admire my sleeping daughter. Just looking at her fills my heart with so much joy, and a strong need to fight, to protect.
I took the backseat for so long, but not anymore. I’m a mother who would do anything for her child, but…I also need my mother.
Picking up my phone and heading upstairs to the balcony is the easy part, it’s dialing her number for the second time tonight that feels like a firm hand around my throat, squeezing life out of me with every passing minute.
It rings for approximately thirty seconds before her harsh whisper cuts through the line.
“Are you serious, Melanie? Two times in one night? You had better be on fire.”
I take a quick glance at my phone screen, it’s three A.M. I swallow hard, closing my eyes as I suck in a deep breath, fighting the hot tears that gather at the corners of my eyes.
“I’m sorry, mum. I just…I made it home.”
She scoffs, “and?”
I can’t believe this.
“Did you…uhmm, have you seen the news?”
She is silent for a beat before she speaks.
“If you’re talking about the one where your darling husband calls you a psychopathic murderer, then yes, I have.”
“It’s not true,” I sniff, shaking my head, allowing myself to lose the battle against my tears as I fall against the wall, left hand gripping the iron rails tight to stop myself from falling to the ground.
“Is it? I have no way of knowing now, do I?”
“Mum!”
The pain in my chest is unlike anything I have ever felt.
“I don’t know what you want from me, Melanie.”
My mother, I want to scream. I need my mother. I need to know that I am not alone, that something—no matter how small—remains of the family we used to have.
“I just…I just wanted to hear you tell me it’ll be okay.” I manage to say, and even that is a big risk, believe me.
She sucks in a deep breath. I can hear her tired sigh from my end of the phone.
“We’re way past that now, don’t you think?”
My teeth dig into my bottom lip, dragging painfully against the soft flesh.
“Of course,” I clear my throat.
“I’m so sorry I disturbed.”
My mother doesn’t say a word, but even good night, before she ends the call.
I pull myself up, away from the wall, and stare at the vast expanse of land the Alistair mansion sits on. It’s a far cry from the world I grew up in as a child.
My tears keep coming with more force, blurring my vision, piercing my heart with invisible needles that it hurts to even breathe.
I press my right hand against my mouth to muffle the sounds that escape my throat.
I can’t let anyone hear me, especially not them.
Too late.
Warm hands wrap around my waist from behind, pulling me into a solid chest.
One breath is enough to tell me who it is; Xavier and his exotic scents.
I sniff, wiping my tears with the back of my hands.
“Go away.”
He doesn’t move. Instead, his grip on my body tightens. He doesn’t intend to let go no matter what I say.
“Now, you know I can’t do that, sweet cheeks.”
I close my eyes, feeling how his words land on my ears with a soft whisper, sending warmth down my spine, all the way to my stomach, and to the middle of my legs.
I press my thighs together. I hate this. I hate how they make me feel.
If I’m so pathetic and powerless against their charm, how can I afford to stand up to Brandon?
“How…how long were you standing there?”
“Long enough to know that the last thing you need is to be alone right now.”
Great. So much for my stealth.
He slowly turns me around, facing him.
His deep blue eyes are heavy with care and concern. But I don’t trust it, I don’t trust them.
Brandon looked just like this before he turned into a monster I cannot recognize.
These men have money, power, and the admiration of my own mother. All of which are things I do not possess.
They could crush me under their heels and not a single soul would speak in my defense.
Xavier raises his hands and cups the hot flesh of my cheeks.
I swallow hard.
It’s merely a touch, yet my entire body is burning up with desire for him.
I can’t stop thinking about his tongue between my thighs, the filthy sounds that left his mouth as he ate my p***y like a starving man.
Even now, as my world is crumbling all around me, all I want is for him to take me on this balcony, have me screaming his name for the entire world to hear.
But desire is a dangerous thing, and I’m one second away from moaning if he keeps looking at me and flicking his thumb over my lip like that.
“Let us help you, Melanie.”
His voice, a deep dangerous baritone, causes my throat to dry up. I’m convinced all the liquid in my throat rushed down to my v****a with how wet I am.
But I can’t do this, not again.
I was able to escape Brandon, but nowhere in this world would be safe enough to hide from the Alistairs.
I place my right hand on his chest and slowly push him away. It’s not enough to make him move, but he takes three steps backwards anyway, a hurt look flashing on his face.
If I didn’t know better, I’ll believe I have the power to hurt him.
“I am going to say this once and only, I do not need your help. If my mother won’t help me, I’ll do it myself.”
I push past him, taking slow strides out of the balcony.
The slick between my legs won’t let me walk any faster.
I need to leave, I need to relieve myself, or I’ll make a mistake I’ll regret for the rest of my life—which, added to the list of things I already regret, is quite a lot.
“It’s best you stop resisting, Melanie,” His words stop me dead in my tracks.
“It’ll be easier that way.”
I bite down a bitter chuckle.
“Stay away from me.”
And with that, I hurry out of the balcony, back into the corridor.
I need the privacy of a dark room and soundproof walls before I lose my mind.
