I turned back to Dayshawn with a heavy heart. He no longer needed to smile. No conviction was needed. And everything that followed it was a blur to me. The crowds cheered. His friends' laughter roared like they won a championship. I mindlessly accepted the bouquet as Dayshawn rose to wrap his arms around me. He muttered indistinct words. Almost like a whisper to the roaring crowds. I heard nothing but quick breaths. When he stepped away, I glanced at him hoping he would repeat it but he didn't.
