Jess:
They stop just a few inches away from my bed. The nurse throws me one last look—eyes narrowed, lips tight—before rolling her eyes.
Then she turns to Maximus, her tone switching to something suddenly sweet.
“I’ll excuse you now, Mr. Hemsworth. If you’d like to see your daughter, she’s in the children’s ward. I can take you there whenever you’re ready,” she says, giving a quick bow before walking out of the room with a little too much grace.
Maximus watches her leave for a moment…long enough for my skin to crawl..then finally turns back to me.
He pulls a chair closer and sits, his eyes scanning my face. “Are you okay? Were you badly hurt?”
His hand reaches toward my forehead, and I let out a soft, shaky wince just as his fingers make contact.
