Chapter 39 - A Gift

I sat on the couch feeling empty and void.    I watched James move out of the corner of my eye, until he was kneeling before me, forcing his face into my line of vision.  His eyes seemed kind, and full of concern.  He had such beautiful eyes.  I loved the way they tipped up in the corners, his long lashes.  The way they crinkled in the corners when he smiled.  I liked that he’d grown hair while we were in the hospital too.  I don’t know why he always shaved it, because he looked so good with hair.  It wasn’t as if he were hiding a bald spot or a receding hairline.  It made him look younger, and less intimidating.  I longed to reach out and feel the stubble of his beard.  I shook my head.  I was being distracted.  Why was I always distracted by James?  I set my jaw and   carefully cleared
