Lisa
Everything still felt like a dream, seated on the bench at my balcony my fingers were still zooming the selfie we took, admiring his soft lips, dazzling grey eyes and that dark beard. Had he just asked me to be his girlfriend for a year? I know fake girlfriend but the fame, the salary was twice what Scott Richards was paying me at the RFC and also a perfect chance to hurt David and Bianca. Yeah, she had this huge crush on athletes although she had never gotten a chance to date one. Turned out she was in my life for a reason, to knock me off my path of suffering in David's clutches to one she deeply desired for herself.
I had not shared a few details of my extended one year stay in Hillwood with anyone, not my sister Ruth or my mother who was still for the idea of me going back home. My plan was to start hunting for a job instead of going back and Jake made it easier. My phone buzzed, it was him.
"You might have to stay close to a TV for what's next"
"I hope you ended things properly, remember respect for women"
"Yeah" he chuckled a bit making me bite my lower lip, his effect did not care about distance" properly is how I ended things with her"
"How did she take it?" The TV was on, I took the remote and scrolled through the channels hoping to see anything.
"Not good but...lets let's talk later I have to do this"
"Okay"
Talking to him was amazing. When I hang up the pillow was the only friend around so I hugged it and imagined it was him. The TV switched to breaking news. Jake and his agent were standing in front of the Hillwood FC administration offices paparazzi and the media buzzing over them like flies on a carcass.
"Ladies and gentlemen calm down" Eddie said, "my client and I are here to give a statement not to answer questions so kindly give us amble time, we will give room for questions after the statement"
Murmurs and grunts could be heard from the crowd. They enjoyed embarrassing people by asking them tough questions and Eddie was limiting them.
"Okay" Jake said coming forward, it was all quiet, "Am here to address the rumors that have been going round on social media. Am sorry to anyone that got offended by them. But am also here to clear the air on a few things" he went silent creating suspense.
For half a minute the flashes from their cameras lit up his face like the 4th of July fireworks. Oozing with confidence was my handsome contract boyfriend that I was not allowed to tell anyone about yet girls all over the world were going to envy me, hate me for nothing. On top of that list was Whitney. My mother always said nothing comes for free, there was always a price to pay and somehow my heart was telling me I was ready for whatever was to come.
"Whitney and I broke up a long time ago, sorry we've been fooling the world"
He looked relieved after saying it but there was something with his eyes that was not adding up. It was not over like he said. Who was I to judge anyway? David despite sleeping with my best friend was still my soulmate not to mention I had not told Jake anything about my relationship life. What was going to happen if he found out or what was I going to tell him if he asked? We were going to cross that bridge when the time came.
"I moved on with the girl in those pictures, her name is Lisa and we are happily dating. Thank you any questions?"
My heart melted with joy when I imagined the look of confusion on David's face and my phone rang, the look I didn't imagine was that of my mother.
"Mum let me explain..."
"What is this am seeing Lisa? You're dating him? How long"
"It's not what you think"
"Then what is it? Are you going to dump David for a celebrity you just met? He is your soulmate Lisa and don't forget he has been there when you needed help"
Mum was playing the guilt card on me. It was true David had been there for me at my lowest but no one was remembering the moments when I was there for him. They say Situations reveal your personality and Circumstances reveal your identity, I never abandoned him until he chose to break my heart. Mum told me to overlook all his other weaknesses and I did but cheating on me, in our bed with my best friend. That was unforgivable.
"Mum am not going back to David"
"You have to, your father wants this for you, I want this for you..."
"Come on mum we both know you all want this because of the money, how much does he owe David's father? I will pay back..."
"Don't you dare disrespect them Lisa what's gotten into you?"
"It has always been what you guys want for me, this time I make my own choices!" I said and hang up.
We rarely fought with my mum but for long she and dad had made choices about my life that turned out to harm me instead. David was such example. His father and mine were long time friends, my entire life I had seen David around and it was automatic the two of us were going to take the family and friendship bond to another level. Now on this one I was not forced, he was sweet and we were in love. He was good at taking care of me despite his arrogance and disregard to my feelings there were days when he just made me feel like the world was mine and y'all were just renting the entire place. It was on this regard that got Bianca telling me as long as he knew my family owed his he was not going to respect me as a wife, to him I was a token of appreciation, a gift from my father, little did I know she wanted him for herself.
Since he cheated on me I couldn't help but wonder, what if it was not love and I was just compelled to fall in love with him? Since we started dating when he came back from some prestigious college abroad to run his father's businesses my eyes had not seen any other man, my heart beat for him alone and I was sure he was a one stop man. Fast-forward merely three days after he broke my heart, there was Jake, titillating my darkest s****l desires every time I saw him and the night we spent together made me feel like for the better part of my life I was caged. For real I wasn't sure whether I would have said no to him even if David and I were not broken up.
David's call dragged me back to reality. I was lying on the coach hugging a pillow tightly. The TV was still on showing the evening news. I ignored his call and yawned stretching my arms carrying the utensils back to the kitchen. The phone buzzed again and I picked it up angrily without looking.
"What do you want from me!"
"Hey calm down there" Jake said politely making my body shiver,I had no idea it was him.
"Am so sorry, I thought you were someone else who has been really bothering me"
"It's okay, can I take you out for dinner?" He asked.
My belly felt some butterflies, he just asked me out on our first date and I was really rusty with no idea when last I had been on one.
"Like right now?"
"It's almost dinner time isn't it? Am sure you can get a nice dress on short notice tomorrow we can go shopping after practice"
"Okay, just give me thirty minutes to prepare"
There was a gentle knock at the door. It was surprising because I didn't remember ordering for room service.
"Hang on, someone's at the door" I said putting the call on hold, "Who's it?"
"Delivery mum"
I opened the door, a delivery guy was standing behind it with a pen and clipboard. He instructed me to sign before he gave me a box and a banquet of flowers, on them there was a note.
"Thank you" I said happily plucking out a note.
How he know how to treat me after one hour of being in a relationship with him was still a mystery. But I bet he would have still done the same even with his reputation not on the line.
"I got them, thank you Jake"
"Did I get the flowers right?"
"Yeah, cream white tulips are my favorite, you did. Let me take a shower, tag me the location of the hotel"
"Sure, bye see you soon"
Out of curiosity I opened the other package. A red shear dress with a slit on the right leg and a pair of black heels, my exact size. Another small package had a golden bracelet and matching butterfly necklace that send another swarm of butterflies in my abdomen. A smile escaped my lips, my eyes became watery and itchy, I wiped the tears of joy off my face and walked to the shower. My friend, the mirror was always there. And this time even without talking the girl in the mirror was telling me, "You deserve it Lisa, you deserve all the happiness he was offering"
