“We wanted to surprise you,” my dad said, his voice light with affection as he reached out to gently brush Alex’s unruly hair away from his forehead, a habit he never seemed to grow out of. “Alex has been worried sick about you even though I kept telling him you were okay. But I couldn’t stop him. He insisted on coming to see you himself.” His tone held both amusement and a touch of concern.
