I was still awake when my father showed up in the small hours of the morning. I really didn't want this conversation, but I had been expecting it and I had a single sheet of neatly folded paper ready to pass to him as soon as he arrived. I thought that would be it - that he would take it, and leave, and show up again in a couple of days to tell me it was over.
